Want to buy a Porsche. How do I do that?

Hmm I see. <90k isn't exactly what I would call ultra high mileage for a Porsche.

Re-Amemiya gear is damn nice. I can't imagine how pricey that is now, never mind how much the car would now be worth!

You're not quite right on the engine and gearing for the GT4: 718 GT4 RS has an engine based on the GT3 engine and is PDK only. The 718 GT4 has the 3.0 turbocharged engine from the 911, but without a turbo and bored out to 4 litres. The 718 GT4 comes in manual (with the long gears) and PDK though. The long gears don't make a manual 718 GT4 a bad car though - I should know as I have one. :D
Nope not ideal :D as I say, they're not the best engines :P and that's ignoring the fact that it has to be removed to do most tasks :D

Yeah, love RE! Love FEED too though, especially his BMI touge monster that held the crown for a long time, till J's Racing finally beat it.

Ahhh, that rings a bell - I went and dug up the video of the car I was referencing, it was the first gen GT4, 385BHP/309LB's/FT from a Carrera S engine with a manual long geared box.
So the GT4RS only has the PDK, fair enough :)

If I owned a GT4, I'd just change the diff ratio, and that'd give me the ability to constantly be rowing through the gears, which is a must for me with a manual sports car.
TBH I usually just steal the diff or crown wheel out of Auto's or smaller engined models, and if that option isn't there, I go aftermarket.
Easily solved either way :) That'd make for a hell of a car then.

That's cool that you own one :)
Have you seen the LS swapped Cayman's? They use a FWD LS4 from the FWD Impala/Monte Carlo's - yep, they cheaped out and made some modern FWD versions of cool old school RWD muscle :( But hey, great for a Cayman engine swap years later

Late to the party but a friend here in the UK just got a GT3RS and is now regretting it for use on the roads, even as a weekender. I went for the last gen 911 Turbo S and it loves crap roads so might be worth a look see.

Tell him to man up :P it's not meant to drive like a Rolls Royce ;)

With R8's you absolutely need to drive the variations, particular gear box:

Gen 1 - Best looking and most feelsome, based on Gallardo but chassis is tweaked and superior
Gen 2 - Based on Huracan, very capable but somewhat devoid of feel at legal speeds.

V8 - Feels fast, but in modern world is not much quicker than a modern hatch if performance numbers is your thing.
V10 - Does not feel much quicker, but is far quicker and is still a properly fast car by modern day standards.

Manual - One of best manuals to exist ever, right up there with Ferrari and Porshe
R-Tronic - Marmite, these are very hard to shift come re-sale time and have been hammered value wise, absolutely drive an R-Tronic before committing as many hate it, also if buying R-Tronic research to see if the GT software can be flashed to it, improves things a lot.
S-Tronic - DSG Twin Clutch so far superior, smoother, faster etc but the least engaging.

If your set on a V10 try to find a V10 Plus S-Tronic and of course with any R8 it pays to get them inspected they are reliable but they can throw epic bills also try to buy private, to avoid dealer margin.
I got mine two years ago with 27,000 miles on the clock and paid £36,000 by buying private, car is now on 35,000 miles and has needed nothing apart from minor servicing. I've got a queue of people wanting to buy it as the colour is extremely rare and desirable, my sole reason for buying and fact it was a manual. Mine was £103,000 new due to been Audi Exclusive spec car, even has the wing buckets. Been offered 45k for it couple months ago, but its not for sale. :)

Seen plenty of 992 GT3 RS on track days, passed them both in my 600 LT Spider. :D
But in fairness the owners of them I'd say at least half are tracking them, very popular on track days particular RMA and Lotus-on-Track days.
I tried to stay on the heals of 2 german stars running tail to tail coaching drivers in 992 RS’s on the Ring. They are on another level frankly managed to sit with them for 4-5 corners then had to let them go as i was well past my talent level but they are incredible things. Need a proper hand to get the most from them but the level of grip and control is off the scale.

Yeah the owners were shocked how fast I was in 600 LT, but I had levelled up my grip as from factory McLaren under tyre the 600 on purpose, first reason is so it would lap slower than more expensive 720S on some circuits and other reason is under tyres the 600 LT is quite a fun road car running the embarrassing narrow 225 fronts and 285 rears, a Carrera T has more tyre contact patch.

On track I ran proper semi slicks, Nankang AR1 which are far grippier than Cup 2, I also up sized to a 235 front and a 305 rear, so could use full power, I'd say corner wise particular high speed 992 GT3 RS was quicker even on a lesser tyre, but medium low speed corners was quite even and the straight lines McLaren was quicker.

Very happy with 600 LT epic on track and an epic road car for touring something the 992 GT3 RS is not. I love Porsches, owned several but the McLaren is another level of specialness and just as capable generally as the very best Porsche has.

If this hasn’t been posted…..I saw this a few years back. Seems in the uk you can’t just walk in and buy a GT3RS

Thanks for posting this, what a brilliant way of shining the light on the corruption going on at these dealerships.

Also had to laugh at typical responses in this thread, specifically responses to the question not conversational, we have 90% of posts providing a completely alternate suggestion. True OcUK fashion to never answer a question but to question the integrity in a vain attempt to show off their own intellect.

I’m amazed an Octavia VRS hasn’t been suggested.

Or maybe... Just maybe... The 90% response of an alternative is because the original idea is potentially dangerous? I'm sure everyone that has suggested the OP start further down the power chain has the OP's best interest at heart.

Lol, no.

If you won the lottery and could buy anything, are you saying you’d plonk for an inferior version of your dream car because you’ve only ever driven a 1.2 litre hatch? You certainly would not.

This is the most nonsensical statement I've ever seen on OCUK and that's saying a lot, it's between you and trentlad at least.

The pretentious and frankly toxic takes regarding people asking questions and giving suggestions earlier were totally irrelevant to the claims made. I feel like I'm a so-so acquaintance of Mags, but he made a thread regarding a rear wheel drive super car and I will not apologise for asking if he's driven rear wheel drive or fast cars before. I will not apologise for suggesting alternatives, he could have responded and told me he hadn't much experience in either but he did not and that's fine. I know people who have died due to blindly buying high performance cars after being used to mid tier vehicles, and that rate is an order of magnitude higher with those driving rear wheel.

Nobody, literally nobody buys a high performance/fast vehicle without a desire to use it at its best and lets face it the temptation is always there even if you tell yourself you'll only floor it on track days, and that's many times more tempting to someone new to a vehicle like that.

It's got nothing to do with suggestions on X or Y, it's genuine concern for someone that might be new to high speed vehicles.

Hardly nonsensical - I was replying to the actual question, not turning it into a safety PSA. The OP asked about a GT3 RS, not what cheap, safer alternative he should buy

Utterly nonsensical given how you and your buddy handled it.

There's such a thing as lateral/abstract thought, and OCUK is a community rather than a blind spot. As such I will employ it without base recommendations because I actually care about the people involved, if I'm wrong I'm more than happy to be so. If it was a car forum where someone was asking a blind question without any background I'd understand a blunt recommendation.

And none of that will change the fact that, for a lot of noobs in high powered cars with no tuition time or skill, their first driving destination ends up being a bush or a lamppost.

Dont know who you think my buddy is but to clear this up, my point lined up exactly with what trentlad said.. The thread derailed into negativity, S2000s, MGFs, R8s and road condition debates when the OP simply asked how to buy the car he linked. I answered that directly early on; speak to a dealer, try a base 911, work up from there if that’s where his hearts at.

The lottery analogy wasn’t literal, it was making the point that people adapt to the cars they drive. Most grown adults aren’t going to jump into a GT3 and immediately stick it into a hedge and if someone is predisposed to bin a fast car, well that’s their prerogative regardless of what they buy.

And none of that will change the fact that, for a lot of noobs in high powered cars with no tuition time or skill, their first driving destination ends up being a bush or a lamppost.

I get your point but Magnolia was asking about buying a 911, I’d like to think after all these years of reading his posts, we can assume he knows what he’s doing.
