Flying to Australia

We’re looking to book with Malaysian for next September/october, looking at going straight out there but stopping for 3 days in KL coming back, sadly because I’m paying for 5 (wife, grandson, daughter and SiL) it will be extra legroom seats only.

I have flown Malaysian (to KL) with the extra legroom seats, only 3-4 inches extra but was certainly a decent airline and the extra cost wasn't a lot

Well, over a year and a half after my original post and quite a bit of points planning later we're in Sydney having flown BA business class club world suites. Given how inconsistent BA can be on service I was a bit apprehensive, but we were very well taken care of by the crews on both legs. The food to Singapore was average, but was much better on the Sydney leg. The seats were great, more comfortable and with a significantly larger foot coffin that Virgin's equivalent. We slept most of the way. Arrived at 6.30am and were fresh enough for a full day's walking around Sydney. Brilliant! It was all worth it.

We’re flying to Toronto this Thursday on a reward flight in Club World. After lots of umming and ahhing We decided to take the plunge and try it with our 18 month old. We went to Portugal in June but this is a different kettle of fish.

It will either go swimmingly and he will survive the flight and time zone changes ok, or it will be absolute hell and will mean we aren’t going anywhere further than Europe till he’s 5 :D

Things to do in Sydney which I enjoyed.

Bridge Climb
Get a ferry to Manly if you like beaches, also travel to Northern beaches and a must Bondi
Blue Mountains

These are very much the things to do..

Avoid..
Bondi..
Kings Cross.. unless ur into red lights..
and buying expensive beers/wine inside the opera house, hint: it's better from the outside :)

Dunno what people mean about culture when they say that about Australia. Genuinely interested to know. If you mean old buildings and rich history, well you aren't going to get that as it was only populated 200 years ago. Hanging around in Circular Quay you are only going to learn how far local businesses can get away with pumping up prices to tourists.
The contrast in the parts where different immigrant groups have settled to me is quite interesting, in particular the food scene. The diversity of the landscapes is Australia's best part imo. Immense beaches, dense bushland, rain forests and ski resorts all within a few hours drive of each other.

We probably could have done one day in Sydney in hindsight, but we were at least staying in a great hotel with a room with views over the bridge and the opera house.

Loved:
  • K'gari/Fraser Island. Will remember that forever.
  • Driving around the hinterlands stopping on mountains and doing small hikes to waterfalls and viewpoints
  • Beaches
  • Weather
  • Laid back attitude everywhere and mostly friendly people

Ambivalent about:
  • Culture
  • Cities
  • Alcohol prices
  • Middle class Australians

Would like to go back for a couple of months or so one day and do it properly.

It's not really about expectations, it's just what it is and it's worth factoring this in vs other holiday options.
It can't have been that bad if you want to go back for two whole months?

Edit - in fairness, you did use the word ambivalent, I didn't appreciate this.

It was a great trip - the things I loved significantly outweighed the things I was ambivalent about.
