New build, possibly water cooled

i can detect burning smell from the psu, i'm hoping the psu internal protection saved it but if not if thats all thats fried I'm very lucky. i'll cennect it up correctly and hope for the best.

I suppose you can call this a learning experience. Don't rush, especially when you have just worked 2 x 12hr night shifts. I sort of remembered P8 connection to motherboard from my last build, I should have double checked.

It was definately a slight burning smell, not major, I am an electrician by trade so I can tell burning components and this was close but not as strong as I am used to, I work on 33kv systems though.

i have just looked at the PSU and I cannot find any other connections that will fit the motherboard. It was for the 8-pin EPS 12V connectors near the cpu. I think the psu is incompatable. So I don't think I did anything wrong as I used the only connections available but I am stumped now. The PSU was a be quiet! quiet power zone 2 1000w which I read several reviews and they were all positive but I think it has gone.

I connected everythin in correct so I think the PSU failed for some reason. The only thing I can find is that the second 12v eps connector is optional and the P8 connector is specically designed for CPU power so basically it should have worked.

I powered it up again and I'm getting a post code of 00 which means cpu not being detected. I think the psu thermal protection cut in and when it cooled down it was okay again but for some reason the CPU got fried. It's too late to mess around with it now so I will try again tomorrow.

Check the CPU socket for bent pins just in case.

The second eps connector normally is optional
But I have had a couple of motherboards
Where they wouldn't post
Without plugging in the second connector before
If your psu has the connectors anyway
I always recommend just plug both in

How were you testing?
Did you monitor temperature of cpu?
Did you check pump rpm before starting testing?

I haven't tested anything, just powered up with nothing connected to the tower apart from power lead, I cleared the cmos and im getting code 99 now which google tells me is no peripherals detected which I am guesing is correct as nothing is connected. I only have the one 12v connection connected now as I read having a second one connected can cause the cpu to fry when overclocking. I will connect it later if I need to.

Sorry thought you said testing
On previous post

I have never in 30 years
Fried a cpu with more than 1 eps connector
Plugged in because I was overclocking
Though for maybe half of that
Boards didn't have 2 x eps

Code 99 sounds like a step forward
I would want at least a monitor connected
Just to see if getting a display

Sorry I was blocked for sending too many messages. I am on the new system now and it is awesome but loud, my wife is not happy. I will need to detune it or get quieter components. Its the AIO I think that is too noisy. The smell of burning must have been because everything was new. I can still detect it if I sniff the PSU.

Set a custom fan curve for the fans in the bios or if the cooler has its own software.

I'd change out the PSU if it's smelling. It's a ticking time bomb.
