9800X3D RAM buying guide by Buildzoid

I've literally just bought my 9800x3d, along with the Strix 870e-e, after coming from an z790 system. I didn't give ram a thought at the time, as I thought my vengenance 64gb 6000 cl30 xmp kit would be ok, and more so because of the crazy high prices at the moment. Now I'm questioning if my ram will work ok on an AMD platform? The ram isn't on the QVL, but that has never been an issue for me. Am I going to have to set manual timings to get my ram to run at the rated speed?

You'll just have to try and see what happens unfortunately. Hopefully it will be ok. Just update BIOS as that should help with stability.

On a side note: I've now purchased a 9800X3d as managed to get it for £280. Not much of an upgrade from the 9700X but hey ho. It's payday.

Well i managed to get my Crucial Pro DDR5 6400mhz 2x32gb CL40 (macron b die)kit I brought just after stuff got crazy but not to crazy. Abit tighter to cl36 6000mhz with a little bit of tuning, which im happy with considing the capacity and running with a 9800x3d

Demand for RAM from AI companies is the reason. Many startups and companies like Google are all building bigger and bigger AI systems.

Just get the cheapest RAM you can find as it won’t make much difference with an X3D CPU.

CL30 RAM is better quality but not compulsory
what would be some good options right now?

Yeah i think I'm resigned to just seeing what gives I guess, as I'm not paying out the stupid money to get more RAM. Great news on that price for the 9800x3d! That is a bargain for sure!

thing is that i have no ideea what works with 9800x3d as ram as i have been all my life on intel.
Well most RAM will work and look for the EXPO profile.

It also depends on your budget. Most good kits in stock are currently £300 ish pounds.

Any kit of RAM with speeds of 6000 MT/s or less and with an Expo profile will be fine.

is there any big difference between MSI B850 Tomahawk and x870 same brand?

The motherboard manufacturers QVL lists can be limited (eg, Gigabyte's list for the Auros Elite doesn't show any 64GB kits in the form of 2x32). However, if you want some peace of mind, you can try checking at the memory makers website to see if they have a compatibility checker that will confirm they've tested your RAM with your chosen motherboard, and hopefully can confirm it works correctly.

Many of the modern motherboards (regardless of platform) can run the RAM at both XMP or EXPO profiles, so you may find that it will set itself up faster than it's JEDEC defaults as soon as you make the correct selection in the BIOS.

Ahh I'll take a look at Corsair's website then. I'm hoping that might be the case with the motherboard supporting both - I'll check it when it comes. Thanks for your help - much appreciated!
