The hot chocolate velvetiser thread

We use a saucepan and heat the milk, with some twinnings coco powder. Add grated chocolate of choice (for us, usually milka/nestle white chocolate crunch) over whipped cream and a couple of cheeky dinky marshmallows with a hint of Black Forest Gateu syrup.

For milkshakes, we use the Ninji creami and it doesn’t disappoint, and because you’re making your own ice cream, you can have any combo you like! For example recently I had a Turkish delight milkshake!

My wife recently bought me a velvetiser out of the blue with a couple boxes of flavours. I’m sold on it and ended up buying myself 6 boxes of other flavours :D

Have you stuck with Hotel Chocolat stuff for now?

What I'm really looking for is recommendations of chocolate flake suppliers! :D

The Knoops stuff is very tasty, but 8 heaped teaspoons a cup means that I'll probably only get 6-7 cups out of a £12 packet!

I definitely want to try a darker chocolate too. The one I got with it is 34%.

Using a variety of chocolate in our velvetiser. Knoops, Mork, M&S, Hotel Chocolat, Kokoa Collection, and some high quality chocolate bars that I freeze and then grate using a rotary grater. Works nicely.

Was recently given some 100% stuff to try, oooh it's drying. You need another drink to go with it. Just absorbs all the moisture in your mouth.

As for how much I use, well I work with weights (coffee nerd), so for 225g of milk I use 33g of chocolate. Start the swirl then add the chocolate over the first 10s or so.

Yeah, I’ve got 8 boxes of different Hotel Chocolat flavour sachets so it should last me quite a while. Would be interested if you find anything good to try though.

It has to be said, from a quick search (mostly on Amazon) most seem to be a similar price.

One exception I found was this, which is about twice the price for about 4 times the weight.

Might give them a try.

yes it's a ridiculous price - I buy cocoa and DIY, looking at knoops web page any stuff less than 100%, the rest is sugar,
so 100% stuff at £14/250g is best value

but you can buy top notch callebaut cocoa at £24/kg https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cacao-Barry-Amber-Cocoa-Powder/dp/B00BLTNL4Q
secret is just you have to dissolve/melt the cocoa+sugar(you add) in a paste with a small quantity of hot water before adding milk
try it with any baking cocoa you have - at most I use 10g cocoa with 300 odd ml/milk

For convenience of pre-prepared (and in my opinion, taste too!), I've always sourced mine from pendragon drinks after coming across a recommendation for UK alternative suppliers. Can buy in bulk which easily disappears in cooler weather (and is tasty just eaten with a spoon...one downside of buying in bulk!), never had a bad bag from there and have tried a few different types.

Ordered a kilo of the 65% Belgian along with some of the flavouring drops, got to say its very good and works out cheaper than Hotel Chocolat. Not sure its as good as Hotel Chocolat, seems to be less creamy so you get less froth but the flavour is great. Thanks for the tip

Got a Knoops next to my office which I nipped into the other day, might have to buy some of their chocolate and try it in mine.

Also down the road from my office got an actual velvetiser cafe and might have to nip in there and try a few more flavours.

I haven't tried Pendragon yet, despite appreciating the recommendation from @Poolybit . I am holding out until I have finished with the catering size powdered hot choc I got from Costco a while back. Also, seeing that they're based in Llandudno (and attached to a chocolate museum!), I might well go there in person at some point rather than ordering a delivery. It's a town I enjoy visiting anyway.

Glad to hear that you're happy with it! Just got another mixed order of some belgian and some parisian in this week ready for the weather to cool down a bit. I prefer the flavour to Hotel Chocolat but do agree with the less creamy bit, still think it goes nice and 'velvetised' though for a great drinking experience. From the 'which tastes better straight from a spoon' point of view, there is no contest. Probably not a worthwhile metric for a hot chocolate thread but think that the Hotel Chocolat stuff tastes a bit weird on its own!

So for my birthday my bro-in-law and his missus gave me a Hotel Choco oh I cba, its the new velvetiser that does hot and cold drinks.

It arrived with a normal white cup seen in the previous machine, and a glass of the same style for cold drinks along with a selection of hot and cold sachets. Not tried the cold just yet but the hot drinks seem to be the same as the previous machine that my bro has. I've just taken delivery of some Whittards Sticky Toffee Pudding White Chocolate so I look forwards to giving that a go later.

So far I am using Al Pro No Sugar Almond milk and it froths 'ok'.

I opted for simply using callets, pretty much use callebaut dark/milk now and order by the kilo to make whatever blend of hot chocolate I want.

You can also go boojey and find chocolate wholesalers, was ordering 5kg bags at one point of lovely fruity stuff but had to stop as I'd find myself grabbing a handful as a snack multiple times a day.

If you're using callets just need to let the milk warm up and not overload it is all.

Probably the most used kitchen gadget, love the little thing. When it's not doing hot chocolate it's sorting milk for my lattes!

Think I need to up my hot chocolate game, I always go for the stir in hot water options as I find them quicker, easier and more tasty than some of "hot milk" options.

So long... Waistline and wallet.

Pretty sure this is where i was getting my bulk from - https://bakery.keylink.org/products/dark-chocolate

Nowadays I just Amazon callebaut dark and milks, store it in big kilner jars and use it for baking too so always on hand.
