Is 3900x a bottleneck for 9070XT at 1440p?

Hi All

I would quite like to upgrade from a 3070 FE and am thinking about a 9070XT. Is there any point on a 3900x processor at 1440p?

Thanks

It will be somewhat of a bottleneck, yes, but it depends on the game and the settings.

There are some games (mainly newer ones) that will still chug a little, but there will be some that noticeably or strongly benefit.

This doesn't use a 3900X, but the results will still be similar because the CPU's gen/architecture makes a bigger difference than the cores in most games.

Personally I would go for it. If you enjoy modern AAA games. You maybe CPU bound in certain games but overall you will be fine.

There's not going to be a huge difference between a 3900x and, say, a 9600x at 1440p. Generally, the more graphically intensive game, the less of a bottleneck. If you're playing mostly older games, then there will be an impact -- but your FPSs will still be high enough for that impact to not really matter.

On the other hand, that CPU is getting long in the tooth. If you're just gaming, moving to a 5800x3d won't break the bank, be net you tangible benefits in games, and will likely be compatible with your am4 board.

Theres a 5700x3d in the sales on here at the moment if you wanted to upgrade cpu...no...its not mine lol

I had a 3900X until recently, and yes, it was certainly holding back the 9070XT, though it depended greatly on the game/settings.

Since moving to a 5950X to extend the life of my AM4 build just a little longer, I still see some instances of performance being left on the table, though there is a noticeable improvement.

As said, a 5700X3D or something along those lines should make quite the difference, though I expect there will be some titles where even with a Zen 2 CPU,
performance will still be adequate on the whole.

Yes by a pretty huge margin. I tried a 3800XT with my 3080 back in late 2020 and it held it back quite a lot. Games have only got more CPU demanding since then and the 9070XT is 50% faster than a 3080. UE5 titles especially seem to be CPU hogs even with nothing going on.

5700X3D would be the minimum I'd be pairing that GPU with and even then it will be held back in some titles like BF6.
