Top end gaming (not streaming) & casual 4K video editing - What MOBO?

Ahh, ok, that's me selling them then.
Why can't you connect them outside of the case, using USB?

M.2 's will be for SSD's and WIFI if required. So 3-4 x 4TB.
4x M.2 slots is possible, but I'd recommend reading the manual for any lane sharing/exclusions.

The X870E Tomahawk in your original post, for example, 1 of the M.2 slots shares with USB4.

I can't see any lane sharing for the B850 Tomahawk, except that one M.2 slot shares with a secondary PCI-E slot.

I could connect externally but not a fan of the look. Currently have 3 on my case. I do have a 14TB back up external drive that'll I'll probably use.

You don't really need SSD speed for 4k video storage.

If you are recording and working with your own 4k content then doing the transcoding and editing on an NVMe is great, for example if you record with the latest iPhone you can use the Corsair USB4 as the drive, it connects via magnet, a 4tb drive will allow up to around 40h of raw footage.

You can then connect it to your USB4 and edit directly on the USB4 drive, and would then simply transfer the finished project to a NAS or internal HHD, both running high capacity mechanical drives.

The other way is ripping movies from optical disc, again limited to Sata bandwidth, you simply do that work on an NVMe then store the finished project onto HDD.

The only reasons for all NVMe are noise, or no cable builds, or DAW work where you store plugins, samples, work on separate drives, but would still store finished work on HDD or/and online. I also prefer my games on their own drive. And prefer an SSD or NVMe for photos as large folders are nippy on HDD, but would have anything I'm keeping also stored on a mechanical for back up.

And no reason for a Gen 5 NVMe currently as nothing in video editing or music production or games benefit.

As I wanted the option to run USB4, four or five NVMe, and four Sata drives with WiFi 7 and no lane sharing U built my AM5 priorities around the motherboard with the intention of upgrading the CPU and Memory later.
The only motherboard at that time that ticked the boxes was the Asrock Nova X870E.

I certainly regret not just dropping £270 on 96gb of C30 Corsair when it was available.
I also just missed out on an additional two 4tb ,990 pro at £240 each, they literally sold out while in my basket elsewhere.
And missed the 9900x for £280 a couple of months back, again my fault for dithering but I had expected to see a similar discount during black Friday.

So anything you do see on great offers, simply pick it up, otherwise by the time you save everything will have increased in price considerably.

Evening all,

Am looking to FUTURE PROOF my build...not interested in touching it for 7-8 years and will hopefully be completed by Spring/Summer next year.

Like the idea of the 9950X3D and RTX 5080 Super when released but am purchasing the more expensive components one at a time each month.

Having the absolute latest/most expensive components doesn't interest me. Would just be nice to play the latest AAA titles with ease for the foreseeable. Bear in mind the last console I had was a 360 and I play no games now.

So far after hunting for deals I have -

Corsair Frame 4000D RS ARGB case - £80.00
Corsair 2 x 32GB CL30 6000 RAM - £210.00
Samsung 990 Pro 4TB M.2 SSD - £210.00

I've no idea what 1440 actually looks like to play but am currently using a top end 4K editing monitor but only 60Hz...would like to bump this up to at least 240Hz if possible.

With that in mind I've had my eye on two MOBO's.

MSI MPG X870E CARBON WIFI

MSI MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI

Is the carbon worth the extra?...or can you recommend another ATX board and why please?

Full on amateur here but love the creative process.
err, if you can get 64gb of 6000c30 ram right now for £210 and a samsung pro 4tb for £210...buy them now
I don't think ram is coming down anytime soon unless ai blows up or samsung, micron or sk hynix decide to invest in increasing production

if you waiting to do build next summer, I'd hold off on the mobo/cpu part though, and for me gpu wise a 9070xt (better value than a 5070ti atm for same performance really) or a 5090. a 5080 isnt worth the price premium for a mere 15% better performance over a 9070xt (and at 4k, a 9070xt can be parity depending on the game played)...if you just want pure power though, 5090 is untouchable atm...but middle of next year you'll be getting close to updates on existing nvidia gpu, so I'd hold off there too

Nowhere is selling 64GB 6000C30 RAM for £210, unless it's stolen!

Am thinking the wise thing to do is save up and buy when next gen is announced...happy to buy this gen then - 9950X3D, 5080/90...will just go ahead and sort the cooling

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/317406535602 - Sorry £230

just a heads up, you shouldn't link other sites that compete with OCuk as they run this website...just say an auction site or something
that being said, 1st link was for some ram sold in 0ct. in the price of ram escalation that's a long time ago, and the 2nd link for the ssd is ~£400, so unless you've bought the ram and ssd, I'd rethink the pricing
nothing wrong with going 2nd hand ram if that's the way you want to go, but we're just looking at what you can buy new in a shop such as ocuk

Ah, had no idea about the competing sites. Links must be wrong. Either way, the point I was trying to make tef the RAM is that having not built in approx 20 years it was nice to randommely choose a component and source it a decent price unknowingly shortly before it soared.

As for the SSD, the savings all add up...although I'll probably get screwed for GPU.

ahh, sorry, must have misread...so you already have the ssd and ram? in which case good
IAMD about to raise prices so if you going down that route, and seeing as you already have some of the companents, I'd just get a move on. I went from 3070tife/3080fe to 9070xt nitro+(which has been great..hooked up to a 4k lg oled)... I was about to say that's £600 or the pulse £540 but they've just gone up in price so never mind...I just don't see the point of the 5080...£980 for the cheapest card...a 69% premium over a 9070xt (pulse is £580 now) for what ...15% better performance...that's terrible.. and look at below..if you're playing 4k, going to be game dependent
by the way, if you're just doing casual vid editing do you need to go full in with a 9950x3d...a 9800x3d is still a great cpu, and cheaper...a 9950x3d isn't going to give you better gaming..or are you oing a lot of vid editiong? i'd stick with 9800x3d, save the extra cash and when the 11800x3d comes out with more cores, sell the 9800x3d and use proceeds from that and the money saved from purchasing the 9800x3d rather than the 9950x3d, and purchase the new cpu..whole point of am5 platform..upgradeable

Some great advice...thank you Craig...off to look at 9070's now
