DRAM Prices Surge 172% YoY with No Signs of Slowing Down

Not sure if this has been shared here yet but looks like it's definitely having an impact already https://www.club386.com/motherboard-sales-reportedly-collapsing-amid-rising-dram-prices/
Seems logical given that you can't even do a build without RAM*. I imagine a lot of would be buyers are scoffing at the prices and deciding to delay/not complete their components purchase.

I think it's fair to say the fresh build market has completely evaporated by now, excluding those that are willing to part with the monies of these extortionate prices.

*Versus high GPU prices of previous years, where a build with integrated graphics was an option.

Yeah it'll be a good reason to hold off upgrading.
This might jus be amazing for Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and valve, they might see many ditching pc gaming for console and it makes sense but really bad for retailer's who sell computer parts. Given that rumours are that the next xbox might will allow it to be used as a PC and possibly might be able to install windows on the steam machine, its not looking good for pc.

Would be great!

On a side note I have seen other components crashing in price as companies try to get rid of their stock before they can't sell at any price. Just seen a MSI B850M motherboard just over £100

Yup, retailers/etailers are just going to change their market base though, they will simply sell direct to companies (which they already do anyway) so I doubt they'll be losing much sleep for now, much like how they all cashed in on the crypto, mining boom too. But when/if that demand from them goes, they are ******, as no pc gamer in their right mind is going to pay current ram prices....

I wouldn't.

Id just live with what I got, to be fair although my system (apart from GPU) is five years old, it's still pretty decent I feel no need to upgrade for a least a few years, the issue is if your PC just died or something like that where you don't really have much of a choice.

Yup my system is still no slouch and only real reason I was looking is that my MB is 9+ years old now so wary that it might start to fail soon. But if that were to happen, I'll just use my work macbook for anything I need internet/browsing wise and my tv for youtube etc. I have got the nvidia shield arriving soon so I'll just pay for nvidia geforce now (used it before and it was incredible in my experience and have read that it's even better now with all the new features and improvements) to handle all my gaming needs (have no interest in console gaming) so I won't be losing out on anything or rather missing out on anything by not having a PC.

People compare it to the GPU doom, but I could easily build a computer and use some junk old GPU, or the iGPU in those times.
New computer wouldn’t work so well without DDR5 and storage. For sure I could take a hammer and get some DDR4 fit in to the slot, but it certainly isn’t going to boot.
Enthusiast hardware sales will drop off a cliff soon.

Pretty much where I am. Got a 4090 with a 5800x3D and was thinking about 9800x3D and AM5 next year....but as I'll need new board and ram I think I'll wait it out a bit more. If I have to start turning some settings down to keep getting those high 4k frames so be it!

debatable as all these consoles also need a lot of RAM, their prices will rise in line with the cost too
of course its difficult to predict market, but the big companies don't buy 2 sticks, they buy huge quantities up front for much more favourable prices. Sony apparently has stated the RAM crunch will not affect its pricing in the short-medium term, that is why they dropped the price of ps5. I am sure their prices might rise but buying a console will be cheaper than making a similarly spec PC from a gaming point of view.

I’ve noticed Ryzen 5000 prices on the used market have already started to climb here in China. I’m guessing people are already giving up on proper system upgrades and buying something better for their existing setup.

of course i've no doubt that console gaming is cheaper...even without the RAM rises, this was still the case
my point is that the prices will rise accordingly when their BOM starts to rise, once their current stock of RAM runs out

Interesting to see where this all goes. Reminds me of the 90's when PC hardware was very expensive. AMD was my only option at that time.
