Wow. So Oscar will be down an entire Practice session. That's massively relevant imo and I think people are playing it down. That will get to him mentally as well not being out there able to dial the car in.

Tough luck , should have used it up earlier also I recall lando winning when he missed a practice session

Norris tends to go well in Abu Dhabi and he is looking good in practice.

Unless he makes a massive unforced error (which is unlikely at this level, especially in the dry), it is only going to be bad luck that stops him on Sunday I think.

Or a usual Norris bottle start…

I do think he’s got enough of an advantage over Max and Oscar to clear off into the distance but those starts of his have got to play a factor.

If Max isn’t P2 though (with Lando on pole) I think there’s a pretty safe bet that Lando takes it at the weekend. We almost need Max as close as possible to cause some excitement on the weekend.

I am genuinely excited to see if Ferrari are as awfully slow as they were in Qatar.

I do very much think the pressure is going to beat Lando up to the point he messes more than one thing up this race.

Hedging my bets on Max or Oscar taking the race to be honest, although not sure where Lando will end up!

Calling Verstappen the GOAT is nothing more than trolling. No mental gymnastics required, just counting to 7... or 8 if you feel like it.
Im ride or die Schumacher fan, it pains me to think anyone is greater. But it is what it is. Anyway enough of that, both Norris and Verstappen appear to be roughly on the same bit of track, gonna be very fun as semi-neutral come what may.

Norris is mercurial, just don't know what you're gonna get out of him to be honest. Part of the fun of him in a fast car. Could be disaster could be epic.

Saw somewhere else that this is the last race we'll see a Renault powered F1 car. They've been in F1 cars for my entire lifetime - literally since the year I was born. Give or take a couple of short breaks. Quite the end of an era.

I think it's reasonable to put Max up there with the greats. Not sure he can really be called the GOAT though. Not yet anyway.

Objectively, Lewis has the stats for that. He's also had more challenging teammates and won a championship in two different cars.

Max has been brilliant this season, no doubt. However I'd hardly say winning the title propels him to the very top of all drivers ever. He's been immensely fortunate that McLaren have had the closest rivalry of all 10 teams (not making that up, they have the closest point totals between teammates, percentage wise).

The trouble is that what classes as ‘great’ will change with every season - put Schumacher in the current car with the race regulations as they are and he might be terrible.

Next year you might find Max is nowhere due to the car not being good and even his driving skills not being enough to make up the difference. He’s dominated the last few years but the car was also clearly in a different league, whereas this year it was more mediocre but Tsunoda was garbage in it.

Hamilton dominated for years but hasn’t had much success with Ferrari.

It’s very subjective and I don’t think we could all agree on any specific metrics, but the number of WDC is a reasonable start, and doing it with more than one team I’d say is another good filter.

And Hamilton spinning in to the wall. Red flag out. What a disaster this season has been for him.

Edit: Fair play to him picking up the shattered bits of front wing and putting it in the car. :D

The difference is that Max lives to drive. If he's not doing F1, he's sim racing or planning some other racing event like GT3. Alonso is similar in this regard and I think that helps broaden their skillset and makes them more adaptable.

Number of WDC will never be a clear success metric because no amount of talent can make up for a bad car. Equally, you can have better drivers in your year, but if they're stuck in a Williams, they can't do much with that talent. Lewis wouldn't have as many titles as he has, had he had better teammates at Merc, which is relevant to almost every WDC winner and therefore means very little when discussing who the best was/is.

If Norris wins, it'll just reenforce my point. Hopefully this last race is entertaining at least. Middle of the season was looking very dull but last few races have definitely improved the season.
