NVIDIA RTX 50 SERIES - Technical/General Discussion

I preferred the 4090 packaging. It was much cooler. The new 5090 packaging is so bland as it's just cardboard. I found it difficult to get the cardboard 'clips' out as they were so smooth.
I think the 3090 packaging was better still, too! Didn't take up as much space but felt really premium. The 4090 was cool with the angled presentation though.

TSMC can't change physics, though. It's full of marketing fluff, most importantly they can only find ways to pack transistors bit denser but that still will mean more transistors means more power use. So we could see 6090 bigger and another 200W+ power use and new PSU needed again, just to squeeze a bit more performance. I'm very realistic about it, consumers won't like that.

I just posted my 4090 on eBay last night, for about the same price I bought it for 3y ago (1750). Within minutes I had 4 offers and then it sold less than 5 minutes after posting it... I didn't expect that so had to scramble to order 5090 (2050 quid) and new PSU (Corsair 1kW). The buyer is a Chinese person, with 10y on eBay and hundreds of positive comments, including by buying GPUs - it will likely instantly go to China, get vram upgrade to 48gb and end up in their AI farms. They didn't even ask for proof of purchase and warranty. Reminds me of the times I sold to them cards they used for mining back in the days, never any issues, they are usually best type of buyer. Also, I should've posted for bigger price for sure, as in Chinese grey market they flip for over 3k easily. And the whole upgrade just to get more vRam so I can use much bigger context window for writing. xD nothing to do with gaming even, as 4090 never held me back.
There is definitely a lot of marketing fluff, but the 40 series and 50 series are essentially on the same node right? Maybe i'm trying to be too optimistic, but I hope we will see some reasonable gains moving forwards at least. I do fear for more power increases though. The head and shocking connectors are already a concern.

Crazy that 4090s are still being snapped up so quickly on ebay. I was tempted to do that when I sold mine, but took a big hit and sold via the OCUK MM which was very easy. I also didn't need to upgrade, but i'm an idiot, so say no more :D

Sold mine for £1100 to a colleague who was really happy to get one at that price.

Could have sold it on eBay for £1500 but I really didn't want to take the risk and I wanted to sell it to someone who would get the best use of it and not ship it off to China for use in AI.

Mine sold for close to 1800 on eBay and that was considered cheap apparently hence vanished almost instantly. They go for like 3k+ in China, so still a very nice income for exporters. I'm happy they ship it to China, it'll never come back to me with any issues. :)

That's the point, adding transistors not a problem, power increase a must though.

Not seeing a huge benefit going from the 5080 to 5090 :D

Tried clean install of the drivers, some tweaking with the settings but still only seeing around 210fps in Warzone compared to 200 from the 5080 :p

I got my 5080 during black fridays, couldn't be more happy with it coming 3090 as newer dll/frame gen helps a lot.
Out of interest, how are you finding frame gen? Which games do you use it on? I find it neat, but on first person games the extra input lag is horrible. It's perfect for flight sim, and sometimes manageable in third person games. Granted, I am very sensitive to latency.

Unsure if its been posted but new drivers released on the 4/12/25.

I was having issues where my system would lock up during gaming and I used DDU to remove the current drivers and installed the new ones (591.44) and touch wood its all been fine since.

Same buyer I probably had. A smooth, no worries sale :)

5090 shines at huge resolutions, due to the extra bandwidth. So it's worth it for VR gaming where you're running over 4k resolutions, and rendering a screen for each eye.
