UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [9th - 11th December 2025]

When the player is directly impeded from going on goal. Not when hes got his back to the goal, defenders everywhere and he goes down after the pulling stops.

What do you think should happen during the shirt pulling that goes on at every set piece in the box? Penalties or free kicks?

So you're saying that shirt pulls in the box are fine as long as they're not being stopped from going through on goal. You're just making up rubbish.

Don't want to concede a pen, then don't shirt pull. There is ZERO need to pull a players shirt.

Like all these things though, you can't say "don't grab a handful of shirt"

You absolutely CAN say don't grab a handful of shirt. There is no part of playing football where you NEED to do that.

Good win away at a team that hasn't lost at home in European for ages, hardly let any goals in and always score at home.

A slow plodding performance but Inter plodded more, so a decent much needed result
Decent :) However you dress it up, it's an exceptional away win. Regardless of performance.

So punish it every time then. Don’t punish it randomly.

How about we punish players when they block someone off the ball as well. VVD did than 2-3 times this game.

Like it or not, most rules have thresholds they need to meet to be given.

I don't think anyone is arguing against ensuring consistency of decisions are applied, but you can't complain about a penalty being given for shirt pulling. Every time you do it you run the risk. The players don't need to do it.

Sure, but that's irrelevant to the penalty decision.

The threshold was met and the correct decision made.

In years gone past under Houllier/Rafa we'd be lauding that performance, solid away win but under the current circumstances it feels a bit flat. Weird.

I know that feeling, and I think it's simply because one result isn't going to get Liverpool out of this hole. Look at the Real Madrid game!

You'll have to see how things go over the next few weeks.

No one wants to see 3 or 4 pens every game though
Then change the laws of the game...still a penalty.
So, Dan Burn being wrestled to the floor by someone is '50/50 at best', but this is an obvious penalty? Nothing like a bit of consistency, eh? :D
How are.you even comparing the two? If Wirtz had a hold of the fellas shirt then the comparison is valid.. he doesnt so it isn't.

Because there was far more contact in the Burn incident than in tonight's penalty. It's immaterial whether Burn was touching the other player or not. If getting your shirt pulled and you throw yourself on the floor is a penalty, then being wrestled to the ground by someone who's not even looking at the ball is also a clear penalty.

But you seem to think the incident with far more contact is 50/50, and a little shirt pull is a clear penalty.

For the record, I think they were both soft, and I wouldn't have given either of them.

If Kane dies it he’s heralded as “smart”/“canny” whatever wlse you want to call it, if someone doesn’t go to ground they’re told they should’ve, it’s a penalty all day for me, maybe it’s a gimme for the error earlier of ruling out Konate’s goal

I think there's enough of a pull to stop him getting to or at least challenging for the dropping ball. I agree that he goes down like he's been shot but that's what you've got to do sometimes for the VAR to look at it cos the ref isn't seeing the pull at all from where he's stood and the lino isn't giving that.

You get a pen awarded against you like that and your first thought is "diving ****", then "wtf has has he got hold of his shirt like that for?".

Dan Burn can get ****ed.

not sure why people are trying make comparisons between 2 different sort of fouls, in addition to 2 different sets of ruling bodies. The threshold has always been lower in European football when compared to the premier league. Would it be given in the prem? very very rarely but in europe its a different kettle of fish.
