I think a key point is when you think back over Amorim's time so far, how often have you thought during a game "that was a great tactical move by the manager, really caught the opposition off-guard with that team selection/ substitute.

I vaguely recall one game this season where he surprised with his up-front selection, playing Mount instead of a fit sesko ??..not sure, other than that i don't recall anything.

I agree that, unless things get REALLY dire, Amorim won't lose his job mid-season, and that the best we can aim for this year is 6th-8th.

I don't necessarily agree that the level of football in the PL is higher this year, but it is a lot tighter because some of the expected "weaker" teams have improved, and some of the expected better teams have weakened compared to the prior season.

We're underperforming our xG by ~4, City are over-performing by ~4 and Arsenal are underperforming by 1.

Difference is that we are letting them in as quickly as we are scoring them!
So does he need time to sort out the defence?

Also let's not forget how bad our keeping situation was at the start.

Is the xG all on Bruno?

The club's plan iirc is challenge (win) the EPL in 28?

So top 10 this year, top 4 next year, challenge the year after?

They've bought young players + Mbuemo and Cunha might hit their final form. Plus new purchases to come.

I suspect Amorim will go if very close to 4th isn't achieved next season. Assuming they get the players they want/need.

One thing that has been ignored this season is how makeshift our defence is. We have chopped and changed quite a lot really. De Ligt looks strong then gets injured. Slab is out injured and Martinez is only just coming back. We really just need to stick with a selection and keep with it.

Ironically whilst all our defenders are getting injured Luke Shaw has played every game! :o

Apart from the new players, large parts of the team are makeshift.

I don't think our back three has been bad. I don't like us with Maguire other than defending corners. He's too slow and makes us sit 10 yards deeper. Respect him but not sad he's unavailable. De Ligt has been our best player in terms of consistent performance but you saw last night how Heaven is a much better ball progresser despite his lack of presence in other faculties. Shaw has been Shaw. A couple of decent halves but quite a few performances where he is very poor at progressing the play despite being the free man quite a lot. Martinez is a definite upgrade. I like Yoro he will be fine.

Where I think we are weakest is the defending of Amad, Casemiro and Bruno. To me that's where we lose most goals that you could consider avoidable. Bruno lets players run off him, as does Amad. Amad is about 5'6" and can get bullied at the back post plus we rely on him a lot for attacking threat on the right as it normally isn't available on the left. That leaves Casemiro. I think he's a ballwatcher too often and he certainly does not organise which I find odd for a player with such vast experience at the top level. I'm convinced that if you had a Wharton or Anderson instead of Casemiro we'd be far better out of possession.

You're also missing the fact we generally look quite tight at the back and then Amorin decides to change half the defence at 60-70 minutes!

I'm honestly shock at our XG. I very rarely come away from matches thinking the oppositions keeper has had a blinder (Everton excluded). Do we just have a high XG from millions of long shots going wide adding up lots of little 0.1s?

I think we do create quite a few good chances but yes, we are padding those numbers a bit with more low probability shots. In theory those should still add up like any other shots but I think you end up with more outliers when you are shooting from crap positions.

I think he's had long enough and plenty of chances to implement his "philosophy", also most fans have been very patient.

Obviously we don't want to be sacking managers in the middle of the season again, so he'll definitely be riding out the season. Problem then is if we do get a top four finish I don't think he will be sacked.

I just don't think his philosophy and tactics are what we need.

Howe would be a great replacement I think

I said Howe a while ago :) is he doing more with less? Although are Newcastle a better/more coherent squad?

Amorim essentially has not had a striker for large parts of his tenure and even now, we have one (talented) noob striker.

Well. He's basically just said "back me or find someone else". I admire his honesty but he's very firmly put the ball in Ineos's court so interesting to see what Sir Jim does.
It would be cheaper to sack Wilcox and Vivell but that's never how these things work out.

Whilst it's been frustrating watching Amorim try and eek out results, few of us could argue that he's been fully supported. Signings have been better but did he really want Cunha, Mbeumo and Sesko when it meant pushing Fernandes back into a position that doesn't suit him and he has to play along side grandpa Casemiro. Objectively he's 3 points off Champions League with no midfield, half his first team missing for the last 4 games and a bench full of children. Anyone think that that reflects well on the board who appointed him?

Suspect he get the same treatment as Maresca who arguably has a much stronger squad but isn't performing any better.
Amorim is smart - he has backed Ineos into a corner and in some ways cannot lose. I genuinely believe he just wants to win. Signing a midfielder or two might just get os back in Europe yet the club doesn't want to do it - they prefer to just ask the coach to compromise and go back on their word.

Hey ho.

I think he's done just about well enough in terms of points, but that's in part due to the league being a bit messy this year in terms of consistency.

Our performances are very hit and miss, and I feel like INEOS are leaning on him to adapt his methods now and he doesn’t like it. In fairness to him, he has been clear from the start that he is dogmatic and will only play 3421, rightly or wrongly.

The owners are now unlikely to spend a fortune on wingbacks and even certain types of midfielders if they think he's likely to fail or leave. We don't have the budget to keep signing £60m makeshift players and flops.

An inexperienced manager with - bluntly - a terrible record standing up to INEOS is not going to go down well at all, is it...

At the start of the season none of us thought we would be competing with Arsenal, City, Pool. Juking it out with Newcastle, Tottenham, Villa, Chelsea was probably the goal. We are doing that. Imagine they had bought a decent CM. Could that be the difference? Yes its been a hard watch at times but I do feel there is a better spirit. The team aren't collapsing to the defeats we were last season which tells you something about the application and dressing room cohesion. I think he has brought a cultural reset but fundamentally we do not have the squad to be any better.

I still think he needs the rest of the season.
