Check your cables - Was having some issues and investigated to find....

Hey guys,

I have already logged this with OcUK and am waiting to hear back from them.

My Lian Li Edge 1300W PSU has developed a small issue.

The 12VHPWR Kolink cable has managed to fuse itself into the socket. Thankfully there does not appear to be any damage to the GPU, although I will be testing that properly once I get a replacement PSU.

I only spotted this after installing the latest NVIDIA drivers 591.44, as I started getting a few black screens while gaming.

I rolled the drivers back but things were still a bit odd, so I figured it was time for my usual quarterly case hoover.

While checking the cabling around the PSU I was greeted with this little surprise…

Main specs of my PC are:

Intel 14900k
Zotac RTX 5090
64GB DDR5
6TB M.2 - 3x2TB in Raid 0 - For performance, this is my gaming PC nothing is kept on it
LianLi Edge 1300W PSU
House in a HAVN 420 VGPU Case

Why were you using a different brand of cable for the gpu and not the included Lian Li one?

Basically the Kolink cable was slightly longer,
Why would that be an issue though, It was rated to 600w, never had a problem before with Kolink cables, until now

Also to add this was a new cable kit when I built this rig with the 5090.
This has been in use since Feb without issue, nothing had been touched or changed until now.

That is a extension kit not a replacement set of cables. Extension kits plug onto the end of the psu's cables not the psu itself as the pinouts are likely to be wrong which is what looks like has happened here. Get ready for your RMA to be declined.

Its not an extension for the 12VHPWR cable but thanks anyways

The extensions in the kits are for the 20+4pin Motherboard Power, and the 4+4Pin and 8Pin motherboard connectors

I would check the contents of the kit before posting such things fella, ta.

Cablemod was regarded as great, until they weren't.

I can only agree 100% with this now. Hindsight is a wonderful thing

To be fair there are a lot of horror stories out there, this had been running for 10 months before having any issues.
Surprised to see it happen PSU end though!

Yep, and 1 or 2 is enough to scare me away.

True, but it's inevitable, and you don't want to be worrying/checking them every 5 minutes 'just incase' for the ownership of the PSU/cables, do you

It really isn't worth the risk of loosing your warranty.

For me personally, I just buy a PSU with the correct length cables, or one that has the option of longer cables from the PSU manufacturer. TBF I do read into the specs and measure stuff, but it's nice to have the option for longer direct from the manufacturer.

Kolink make (or at least put their name on) power supplies with 12VHPWR cables. So unless 12VHPWR cables aren't actually standardised so they work together, then they should be considered as good as 1st party cables, since they are 1st party cables with some PSUs.

Yeah I will replace the Lian Li edge 1300w with another, was looking at some of the Corsair PSU's but from reading around in here it sounds like they have gone down the pan.

The LianLi Edge 1300w is a great PSU, but with the connectors on the edge it shortens the length of the cables a bit when mounted in the HAVN 420 VGPU case.

Quite surprised by your post to be honest, I've seen a fair few of your posts over the years and thought you were solid, and knew your stuff.

Go with whatever works for you, but I'd definitely want a longer warranty than Lian Li offer personally. They seem to always be shorter than others? But if you need side mounted connectors, then I guess it is what it is.

Yeah, I had a Corsair PSU recently that nearly killed my system, and the warranty process was 'interesting' to say the least

it was also the third product of different things I own by them, that failed. So no more Corsair for me :cry:

I now have an NZXT C1200 ATX3.1, and adore it. 10 Year warranty too

Thanks for the heads up, yeah I'd moved away from Corsair for products a while back, my son has my old Corsair AXi 1200w PSU in his PC though, may have to nick that in the mean time

That was my line of thinking, it was hardly a cheap cable kit.

It just goes to show, the price doesn't reflect the quality anymore

Everything is knocked out as cheap as possible, usually in places with question QC, such as China versus Japan, and sold at an inflated price.

You only have to look at brands that's QC has gone out of the window along with it's build quality, such as Bosch with car parts, which because they now produce stuff in China, means China does the usual thing, of making even worse knock off's, so that adds an extra layer of bad QC/being conned/worries.

Another example, is how **** household appliances are now. My grandparents had an oven, that must have been 60+ years old, to the point it outlived them - find me one that lasts 5-10 years now without problems/failure, the same goes for washing machines, TV's etc.

Everything is just made to last the limited warranty/lease agreement now, the same with cars. But they'll sell you an extortionate extra warranty package, that should have been included as standard. Greed at it's finest.
TV's now have a 1-2 year warranty, yet magically if you pay extra or say buy from John Lewis or Richer Sounds, you get a proper 5-6 year warranty, which you'd expect when spending £500-XXXX on something like that!

When looking for appliances, I try to get it from JL, they price match and generally you get a longer warranty along with it.

Yeah, I think that's the first time I've seen a 16-pin cable burnt on the PSU end! That said, most earlier PSUs and the box adapters still plugged the 16-pin into the previous 8-pin PCIE/EPS12v, so maybe not enough time has passed yet.
