*** The Official M5 MacBook Pro thread (it has the M5 chip and everything!) ***

Is the M5 still faster than the M4 Pro and even the M4 Max?

My M4 Pro 16 inch is only a few months old but I knew this was coming and pleased the speculators were correct in saying tandem OLED would be late next year.
No, it’s not as fast as the M4 Pro. You’re not missing out on much.

I was surprised at how much faster the Pro and Max versions of the Apple silicon are.

Hold out for the OLED panels for your next upgrade.

I must admit I am constantly hitting the 16GB RAM ceiling, so next Mac I will definitely get more, just need to suck it up that Apple Tax.

I don’t even have Apple intelligence turned on. Probably to make it more worthwhile, going to get the Pro version at £1399 tier, I think that has 24GB of RAM.

Do you mean the MacBook Air M5 with 24 gigs of RAM, because the Pro starts at £1600?

Work issued me with a base Air M3 with only 8gigs of RAM so I constantly sit at high RAM and swap file usage (Press F in chat), so I’m wanting to move to buying myself a Pro M5 and ask work to contribute to the cost.

Just got a new MacBook Pro 24gig/1tb model! The build quality is amazing.

I haven't had a Mac in 5+ years any essential apps I should be downloading? Safari seems okay so far. I used Firefox on windows.

Depends what you use your Mac for but some apps I always use:
  • Alfred
  • Rectangle Pro (might not be so necessary these days)
  • Sound Source
  • Daisy Disk
  • Shottr
  • Pika colour picker
  • WhatsApp
  • Discord

I am considering an M5 as a development machine. The benchmarks look pretty good, and the cost with 32GB of ram seems ok to me.

Am I best waiting for the M5 Pro series to come out though? Apple are unlikely to discount the current M5 I assume; I just can't help but wonder if I'd be annoyed with a 14" screen, even if it would spend most of its life on a dock.

Or would I be better off going for an m4 pro mini? I don't suppose I really need the portability although occasionally it would be nice.

I don't think anyone else can answer that for you. For doing any general software dev (i.e. not GPU intensive) I doubt you'll see much real world difference between any of the M4 or M5 machines in day to day usage. Reason to go up to Pro/Max/Ultra is for the GPU cores imo.

yeah the m4 to m5 performance gains for general use are fairly tame. The graphics improvements are nice but the main thing is the improvements to AI model running. For some types of task it's a 3-4x improvement. So really depends on what you need your dev machine to do.

Work has agreed to let me jump from windows to a MBP 14 with 48gb ram upgrade. But I've told them to wait for the M5 version to come out. I'll run some lighter MoE LLMs locally so seems worth waiting for.

Ok interesting so I don't need the pro chips as I wont be doing any intensive graphics work.

Development wise its scala, flutter, c#, sql, Cosmos, Spark, large databases. So I guess it comes down to a question of portability and if I really need that, or if I can save a bit and just get a mini. Hohum.

Ordered one of these bad boys as they are doing a stonking deal at CostCo for £1299, it will be replacing my MacBook Air M1 workhorse. Looking forward to it.

I'm assuming that M5 Pro and Max will be coming some time early 2026. Do we think that will be the OLED screen refresh or is that likely for M6 in 2027?

I think there’s no chance of it happening with the M5 series.

I'm starting to wonder if full fat M5 comes late in the year and M6 gets pushed to 27. With nand costs skyrocketing apple may punt to keep a lid on price rises.

Sold my M4 MacBook Air today. I really struggled to live with the 60Hz screen, and 256GB of storage became quite annoying.

Another retailer’s Black Friday event ends tomorrow (10% off) and I can get 10% cashback through NX rewards so I’ve been thinking about being a bit of a dork and getting the M5 MBP with 32GB and 1TB of storage. It’ll be massively overkill for what I do, but I tend to keep my PCs for a long, long time.

I tried to find a 32GB/1TB M1 Pro on Facebook but have been struggling. I use one for work and it’s as good today as it was when I got it 3 years ago. Even though it’s not clear how long Apple intend to support it for, I reckon I could easily get another 3 years out of the M1 Pro. Wish I could buy the damn thing off them!

I think that’s the exact spec on mine. I’ve got AC+ until next summer. If I can renew that I likely will and keep it until it dies or it’s no longer supported. It’s been great.

Although I do like the black MacBooks!

Nice! I have my M1 Pro hooked up to 2 x 4k 120Hz monitors and it runs them no problem, even if I open the lid. Quite different to the terrible M1 which couldn’t even run any form of dual monitors.

I honestly can’t think of anything I don’t like about it. If Apple do support it for 7 years (wishful thinking), it’ll be incredible.

I just posted a thread in the Wanted sub-forum in case anyone wants to sell their M1/M2 Pro :)

My 2017 iMac has only just stopped getting security updates.

That’s good going! Not quite as good as the 10 years that Microsoft provide for Windows, but then they don’t have to support the hardware too unless it’s a Surface.

Think I’m gonna have to order an M5 before the deal runs out at midday. It’s only 3x more expensive than the M4 MBA I just sold

Would any of you consider Pro version just for browsing and using as a light utility machine ?
I would if I could justify it but my M1 MBA is fine. The only thing I want in addition to it is a bigger screen but for something I just browse the web on when I'm watching TV I'd rather put the money towards upgrading my main machine.
