I thought it would be nice to have a thread for people who are on their own over Christmas. Random chat. Whatever.

Personally I'm planning on binge watching Wallace and Gromit and I also have the whole of the Game of Thrones TV series to watch at some point as well.

Off topic adjacent, but I would really recommend not wasting time with game of thrones. It was one of the best tv shows ever but the way later seasons were handled makes it excruciatingly impossible to recommend.

Ah, OK. Thank you. I'll read the books instead.

I disagree - GoT was fun all the way to the end. It does get a bit silly at points but when god gives you lemons, enjoy the lemonade :p

Well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it yet :)

Yeah, watch GoT. At times it was great and some people didn't even mind the last series.

Worth a watch.

Extended versions of LOTR back to back feel like a good Christmas time entire day to fill.

A true lemon is a hybrid of the citron and the bitter orange. Its origins are uncertain, but some evidence suggests lemons originated during the 1st millennium BC in what is now northeastern India. Some other citrus fruits are called lemon.

Lemons were 'invented' not a product of 'God' :p

Not strictly alone alone but my immediate family (dad, mum, me and brother) decided years ago that Christmas is a very pointless forced buy stuff for no reason holiday.

Used as an excuse for family to get together and buy stuff no one needs, as a substitute for seeing family and buying things this rest of the year. It's a very toxic consumerism holiday (designed that way, it doesn't actually have any meaning behind it apart from spend spend spend) that devolves into "what do you want?".."nothing I have money to buy what I want" over and over. It was just a pain in the ass obligation every year. Instead we make an active effort to see family during the year as much as we can make time for.

We still do a "Christmas" dinner at mums which is just a Sunday dinner with pigs n blankets and spend a hour or so together, but shortly after dinner and dishes washed we leave. No presents.

We do not have kids, I never want kids and neither does my brother, we are in our 30s.

My plan is to wake up around 10am, probably watch Santa Clause with Dudley Moore which is an all time favourite (I still love Christmas movies). Head over to mums for about 12-1 help out with what I can cooking wise, eat until I cannot move, leave around 2-3pm. Collapse onto the sofa stick some show on have not decided what yet then break out the chocolate which is a rare occasion for me lately and try to not be sick. I might have a Yule Hog ready to be inhailed, who knows

Agreed.

It was brilliant outside of one or two (imo) dodgy changes/omissions from the books, not including Lady Stoneheart especially was criminal in my mind. That said, it was still a good watch up until the final 2-3 seasons and the last one fell of a cliff hard enough to ruin the entire experience for me.

If the OP enjoys reading the novels are a much better experience.

The extended LOTR movies run at around 12 hours I think, not a bad way to spend Christmas. The Harry Potter movies feel quite festive in my opinion also, although obviously more YA/child focused.

I always go for a long drive xmas day, have done for the last 8 years... roads are empty and usually end up where my dads ashes were scattered! (Lizards Point in Cornwall) then come home pig out and watch some series.

My Christmas movie is 'The Martian'. For years without fail, that goes on, on Xmas afternoon. And a few beers are drunk.

Without darkening the thread to much, I'm always mindful of the fact that Christmas is a bloody awful time of year for some people. It was for me many years ago.

I dunno what roads you go on, I go to my parents every other year and the A1 going south to London from near Peterborough is always busy and full of bell ends who can't drive properly because they are doing their once a year trip in the car.

Doing 50 hogging the middle lane etc . Probably the other half are drunk.

Bloody nightmare I'd take rush hour over it.

Yea I completely agree but it's a bit of a catch 22 (again by design) because unless you absolutely pre agree there is a chance by not getting them something... You know....

My folks are good, my brother's we just exchange a bottle of bourbon whiskey which is fine.

The Mrs and her side are a ******* nightmare though, every year they ask me, and I say don't get me anything, and every year I get rubbish I wish they would have saved their money.

For me, I think Christmas is a great time to see family, have a nice meal etc, of course, that side of things is great, but this whole gift giving thing is ridiculous.

I will caveat what I've said above with it's okay to spoil children with presents from Santa, that I do agree with.

I've never been able to watch it again since it aired. It still fills me with rage how it ended.

I'm also at home alone this year.
I've never been a fan of Xmas since we had the falling out in my extended family.
My mums depression is so bad this year she couldn't cope with a visit.

So I'm at home with the dog.

I was going to go camping Xmas eve but I can't because of the dog. So I might take my mountain bike out.

I do not want to sit indoors on what looks like being a really nice day.

The other problem with that stretch of the A1 (former North Herts resident) is that folks not familiar with think it’s a motorway and lose the plot when they arrive at the first roundabout or find a tractor chugging across the road.
