Hi Everyone,

I've had a ASUS TUF RTX 4070Ti Gaming OC for some time now (purchased in 2023 from OcUK). But in the last year to 6 months during certain games like Tarkov, Total War Warhammer 3, Space Marine 2 etc. the fans will run to 100% and the card sounds terrible, like it's going to take off and it drives me nuts. My case has 6 intake fans, 3 exhaust fans, airflow is good. The PC is off the floor and on the desk and dust is minimal.

Full Card Info:
ASUS TUF RTX 4070 Ti GAMING OC
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti
PCIe v4.0 x16 (16.0 GT/s) @ x16 (2.5 GT/s)

I've tried:
Reseating the card multiple times
Checking the power cable into the card, reseating it
trying the quiet switch on the card itself
Looking for an updated BIOS for the card, it is already up to date.

I've now got HWiNFO and have found the following (Temps in C):

SensorCurrentMinimumMaximumAverage
GPU Temperature27.423.876.228.7
GPU Memory Junction Temp34266831.7
GPU Hot Spot Temp3632110.936.1

Sorry I would upload an image, but I've no idea where.

Does my card required deshrouding? Do I need to re-apply thermal paste and pads? Where do I even start?

Thanks

So just to update, I've disassembled my GPU following some guides on the youtubes, worth while watching Jayz2cents video on doing this particular procedure first.

I've applied Thermal Grizzly TG Phasesheet PTM to the GPU after cleaning. I was lucky to not have any of the thermal pads rip or tear on me.

After putting everything back together and the GPU is back in and running, the card seems to be performing right now, no 100% fans running, GPU Hot Spot Temp is sitting at max 75c!

I'm glad it was a simple fix.

Not going to lie, but I was actually super nervous about tearing down the GPU, I've built so many pc's over the years but never had to take apart a GPU in this manner.

I will add, perpetration was key. I researched which Thermal pads I would need for the GPU and purchased 1mm, 1.5mm and 2mm pads just in case some of them ripped during the "taking apart" process but everything stayed intact.

The TG Thermal pad had a decent video tutorial provided by TG themselves so that was worth watching because removing the plastic coating from both sides was more stress.

Also, making sure all screws which are removed from the card are put back into the exact same place is key, don't screw them back in 1 at a time, screw one till it bites, then move to the opposite end of the GPU and screw in another until it bites and repeat the process until all screws are back in at bite point then start to screw them in fully.

Having a small screw driver set is also key!

I'm not impressed that you had to, with a card that's only 2 years old.

Having done the tear down, what would you say was the problem?

Same. I thought the Tuf was one of the better models for build quality. Thermal paste on graphics cards should last 5 years, the only card I ever needed to repaste was my 4850. That thing ran at 90c full load, reduced that to 50c full load with an Arctic Accelero cooler that had a 140mm case fan ghetto rigged to it.

All of that said, the cooler does appear to be very good and this instance was a bad thermal paste application that the OP has fixed very well.

It's hard to say exactly because I haven't got a lot of experience with the thermal paste application on any other GPUs, I only have experience with applying my own paste to CPUs, but it did appear a lot of the paste had pooled around the outside of the chip?!

taking the time to clean the cooler and the board itself was an easy and satisfying process with cleaning alcohol, cotton pads and kitchen wipes, but applying the TG Phasesheet PTM was tricky!

I have got photo's, but not sure where to upload these days.
