The Dry January Club

Christ, here's me thinking I'm just gonna improve my health a bit for a month and you lot are talking about kidney failures and full-blown alcoholism :D

I'm only doing it to shed some Christmas pounds and get a bit healthier / fitter, but it sounds like @moon man could benefit from jumping on this wagon too.

Join me dude, if you survive a month I'll maybe eat a vegan meal :D

Me? The Third Duke of Wyborne. Going in dry for January. With my reputation? ARE THEY MAD?

good luck to everyone going for it this year. I did this about 9 years back now and since then i would say it was the best decision i made. i started with just January being the goal then i moved to 12 months then just didnt see the need to have a drink at all. initial six to eight months were tricky as you pass in to the summer but after the first 12 months it wasnt that difficult, especially as prices were starting to creep up

I'm drinking far less nowadays. I can't be bothered with feeling rough or jaded the next day.
This, dry January will be a piece of cake.

Just can’t deal with the hangovers these days. Something happened when I hit my early 30’s which meant they became significantly worse, I dread the thought of waking up with a banging headache.

Some people do seem to suffer much more than others. Personally I've never suffered from hangovers apart from the odd occasion where I have really overdone it and had a skinful. Doubtless there have been proper studies into genetic differences. I believe some Asian people have a problem processing alcohol and I worked with a young Chinese guy who very much wanted to party, but would get ill if he had more than one drink.

i only get mood hangovers on red wine, almost like feeling high has to be paid for the next day

I seem to have a limit, like a switch that if I pass I'll almost certainly be ill and it's (pathetically low), like 3 pints and I'm fine, 4 and I'll be really rough the next day. Yet others I know can sink much more than and feel fine.

Won't be doing dry January myself though, I do enjoy some wine with my dinner, not nearly enough to suffer a hangover from it though.

I'm not Chinese.

Despite a 25 yer military career, I’m pretty much teetotal except for very rare social occasions, and even then it’s purely to ‘fit in’ a bit. I have absolutely no desire to drink and it does nothing for me.

So yes, dry January is a piece of cake.

Pieces of cake, however, are a completely different problem and are definitely an addiction I struggle with…

How's it going, @Diddums (et al participating) ?

I'm going to give this a bash this year, never done it before. Last time I did a month off the sauce was when I was in Iraq in 2008. It's probably been 10 years since I did more than a week.

Got a crate of 24x330ml Peroni 0% off Amazon delivered yesterday. Not too horrible. Better with a slice of lemon/lime. Had a few last night, still felt a little un-refreshed this morning, but putting that down to fatigue and dehydration coming off night shifts yesterday morning.

So far so good

Hope the others are doing as well!

Fine here, but it's never a struggle!

I'm still going through the crazy dreams stage though which always messes my sleep up. Always get this in the first week to 10 days of cutting it out....get lots of disturbed sleep and really vivid dreams.

A week now so the brain fog is starting to lift and I'm getting back the concentration and energy levels that are the best bit about cutting out alcohol.

Also, anyone that thinks alcohol is a good drug, hasn't tried any good drugs :P

Started to get horrible palpitations when drinking back in October so haven't had a drink since then. First dry Christmas since I was legally allowed to drink (and probably even further back).

The only thing I've really missed is a nice pint of bitter / ale. I have drank my own bodyweight in Guinness zero over the festive period and I've had some lovely non alcoholic beers though, so it hasn't been too bad.

A big part of me is tempted to continue through January and maybe just stay sober.

I had that too. A while ago I had a brief episode of atrial fibrillation. I managed to trigger it again with the hangover from my Christmas party. As I'm writing this out, though, I just remembered something - the first event seemed to be some sort of panic attack. I wonder whether this was the same again.

Anyway, I also don't drink much. If I drink a pint a week, it's an unusual week.

Still going but I never really feel any different. Its mainly for the lower calories and waking up clear headed. Also not getting up for a pee is nice. Stupid beer...
