The Dry January Club

I don't drink but just to say anyone doing this keep it up and note the benefits:

- Optimal brain function, you will actually get higher intelligence as your brain is not being restricted by a toxin, plus you will feel a lot better.
- Your general mood will be much improved. Alcohol is a depressant and prevents your brain from reaching the optimum state for a good mood.
- You won't be damaging your liver. You only get one, and it's one of the most important organs for human health, responsible for removing toxins from the body.
- Greater energy levels. Without alcohol your body will be functioning optimally and you will have more natural energy and motivation.
- No hangovers. No feeling awful the next morning and wasting days of your life feeling terrible.
- Much better sleep. Alcohol interferes greatly with natural sleep and prevents you reaching the REM stage of sleep, so you will not sleep properly and wake up tired.
- Save money. You are wasting money on something that is poisoning you. Plus you won't need taxis as you can always drive. There are lots of better things you could spend the money on, and alcohol is not cheap.
- Longer life. Avoiding alcohol means better health and a longer life. You have a much better chance of getting to enjoy a retirement.
- Less risk of dementia. Alcohol can seriously damage your brain. Not drinking means less brain damage, and less chance of senile dementia.
- Less risk of doing stupid things. When you are drunk, you can do dumb stuff that you would never normally do, causing you problems.

Dry people never leave the house
I'd say about 50% of my friends are 'dry'.....mostly because I hang around with a lot of people into mountaineering, climbing, skydiving, etc.....who are dry because they don't want to waste their lives sat at home hungover rather than getting out and doing stuff. Main reason I don't drink most of the time.

So....no :P

You don't have to drink so much to have hangovers all the time though. I know people with plenty of outdoor hobbies who enjoy a drink, however I know very few who binge or drink to excess.

Same most of my friends don't drink and haven't for a while now. Mostly into sports and fairly health conscious.

I only drink when I go on holiday, which is every couple of months.

Before last month, last time I drank was in August. Next holiday will be over Easter. So...dont need to do Dry January :)

But I am slowly coming to the idea of giving up alcohol completely. I have done 10 months with zero problems.

I dont really drink, but it would be nice to go out,

I have been invited out but to climbing, whilst its alright, I didnt really take to it, nor did i find it particularly a good way to socialise, I understand that its a hobby yes,

If i was going out to a gig or a music event or something, i would much prefer this, however some of my mates for two reasons dont do this much anymore

1) i think its because they have kids
2) they dont want to drink

so it kind of ruins the plans

It’s the kids mate. Not the alcohol. Soon as kids arrive people disappear for a decade.

I prefer not drinking at gigs, no need to spend half the gig dying for a pee or missing the show.

I find hiking a good way to socialise. Chat about life while sweating up a hill in the British countryside and stepping on cow ****.

I absolutely love it.

On the point of alcohol, we usually get dinner at a pub after the day of hiking and might enjoy a pint with that. Definitely no more than that especially if I'm on a multiday hike because that would ruin me, and I don't drink much in general anyway. Most of my friends that I'm out hiking with or my OH are the same. I can't imagine hiking when you're drunk or hungover - loads would go wrong :p

I guess it depends, i generally want to socialise with younger people , and i like music more than i like hiking to be honest. Although i have done both, not so much hiking, although riding bikes, but i find it difficult to socialise or chat when people are in a single file, i also dont particularly like riding up hills.

Given my teens, twenties and thirties were going out to clubs/watching dj's and my fav producers, this is still very much where my heart is but I do love the outdoors to, like I would want to go camping , etc

in my early 40s now i find myself wanting to socialise with the younger 20's, 30s generation more than people in 40s. Even when it comes to liking girls etc i would much rather go for someone in their 20's

Older life i find is so much more slower paced and im not liking it much , other than you have more money to play with, people just dont make the time for you i find, its not as spontaneous and fun

I know its slightly off topic as its about dry jan, however it sort of spans across a lot of months. This is why im trying to make friends

I’m in, drink far too much and keep wanting to knock it on the head but the usual slip ups occur. Want to go the whole year but baby steps so had my last drink on New Year’s Eve ready for a month off at least. No slip ups yet :)

That's a bit of an odd leap to make, there's a massive area between "stone cold sober" and "unable to leave the sofa due to hangover". People can have a glass of wine with a meal or a beer watching the footie at the pub without becoming paraletic and a habitual layabout, and I say this as someone who's on the wagon and doesn't need booze to sit around doing naff all!

I didn't quite hit dry January as had some leftover booze to clear out, but currently day 3 which is as long as i recall in a long time. I rarely drink to excess, but downloaded a an app to try and track things and was fairly shocked to be around 40 "units" a week consistently, just by having the odd beer or two a day and sharing wine over the weekends.

My main goal is to just cut down massively. Mainly for fitness improvements to see how it impacts cycling/running

I suspect @mid_gen obviously knows the massive area between the two, especially if you've read his previous posts on here. I do agree though. The key thing is moderation after all.

Yeah, there's also the fact, there's been plenty times i've had a bottle of wine on a Saturday night and still gone out for a 2-3 hour bike ride/run the next day. It might not be as easy as without it, but it's a doable thing. Probably not something for mountineering/climbing though :p

It's the bit in between that I don't like...when you've had a couple and just feel a bit groggy and crap the next day, not a full hangover, just.....feeling crap. Just not worth it for me.

I always do a few festivals each year and go full fear and loathing and get it all out my system in a good blowout, then live wholesome the rest of the time, works for me :D

Im gonna try and drink more in 2026. Last few years I've really cut down, usually only drink 2 days a week, sometimes 3 days a week.

Im gonna try and drink a bit more regularly, YOLO and all that. I think its all balance, but a lot of people who dont drink at all are borring as ****.

Wet January? :p

Or maybe, if you have to drink to enjoy something or someone, maybe its not that fun?

There is a time and a place and I still like a good lads night out of course. I can see me slowly winding down drinking and giving it up entirely at some point. Next year.... yeah next year.
