Solar panels and battery - any real world recommendations?

It depends on what you are looking for, there are so many brands now at various price points with different features.

Sigen is the current ‘darling’ of the industry (aka influencers) but it’s priced accordingly (e.g. it’s expensive).

Tesla is a mainstay and is a competitive option and a large installer base.

GivEnergy are the biggest U.K. based supplier, have a patchy customer service record but they seem to have gotten past that and have a pretty broad range of offerings now.

These three offer things like fully automated gateways which can take you off grid in the event of a power outage.

Then you have a plethora of Chinese brands which come in at a lower price. Some offer things like gateways both manual and automatic.

Panel brands are less important and are largely a much of a muchness.

What battery and panel brands should I be aiming for ?
Almost identical to my run between garage and house:

Ours is under the block paving, so they went down about 30cm and placed a conduit in and fed the cables through. They re-emerge at the house and go around the wall.

I see Aiko panels come up often and Sigen panels/battery.
Panels wise they are all very similar, don't fall for any hype about super efficient panels etc. As for batteries, personally if I was doing it again now I'd just go for the cheapest, something like fogstar..

W/m² - that is what you want to look at, along with the size of the panel, you need to optimise the layout and panel size to get as many on your roof as possible, you could end up with three rows of slightly smaller panels vs two rows that are slightly larger plus loads of wasted real estate on your roof.

realistically i wouldn't want to pay more than £9-9.5k for a 16 panel system. it's 2026, not 2023 lol...prices have dropped massively

except sigenergy are one of the most expensive brands

i'd go for cheaper like solax and i'd be filling the rear of that roof with panels aswell, you will regret it later on if you dont

What is it with these companies picking the smallest inverters they can get away with aswell? A 7.6kW south facing array and they choose a 6kW inverter. There's literally no difference in the cost between the Sigenergy 6kW and 8kW inverters and both need a G99 anyway. The 8kW model also has 3 MPPTs in case you want to add more panels in the future.

The problem with that is most installers won't install them. Solution, get a compatible 48v system installed, and add the batteries afterwards.

If you're putting it in the garage, you could go with Victron, it doesn't look as nice as a Sigenergy system, but its very versatile and you can add Fogstar batteries - 16 kWh for £1750.

Trouble with Victron, is finding someone to install it.
