Hey All,

I can't decide if I should upgrade from a 7800xt to a 9070xt before the prices jump up? I play mostly at 1400p tho I do have a 4k Oled TV hooked up to the pc and at times use that.

I could maybe sell the 7800xt and offset some or half of the price of the 9070xt so it's a £300ish upgrade. Whats you's guys thoughts?

Cheers all.

My thoughts are what is the 7800xt not doing well enough now?
Tbh it's a good card, I'm having to put a few settings down a notch on Borderlands 4 to get 120fps on 1440p and that's making me think more games will be coming out soon enough that I'll have to do this also, I guess the price rises is making me feel like I should upgrade then I know I'm good till the next gen gpus and beyond.

Do you value things like ray tracing?

It'll be nice to have no doubt but I've never really seen it in action with my own eyes having the 7800xt and knowing it's not good enough to run it with decent frames I've never activated it.

It would be nice to not have to use FSR in games and rely on fake frames in some games.

You'd still need FSR even if you get a 9070xt, although that has Version 4 of FSR which is almost if not as good as DLSS 4.

RT is in my opinion not worth upgrading for. Ultimately your decision but I'm not sure it'd be worth spending money on a new card, others may disagree.

Worth taking into consideration thank you, I've been toying with the idea for a few days, and no matter how many youtubes videos I watch I cant make my mind up lol.

Your 7800xt is still very relevant. I think the only thing a 9070xt has over it is better RT, which isn't worth spending money for. And FSR4, which might be worth spending money on depending on how much you can get for the 7800xt.

It's not an upgrade I'd personally go for, but there's not exactly a lot else to choose from without spending silly money for not much more improvement.

We've probably got another GPU shortage and delayed next gen launches to look forward to also, so I wouldn't blame anyone invested into PC gaming from making the jump.

Its a decent performance boost, 40-45% plus you get a useable upscaler with FSR4. Worth it for £300 outlay imo.

The days of aiming for double or more the performance on a new card for a reasonable price are long gone so I look for 50%~ improvements nowadays, although at 4k using FSR4 performance/balanced you may get almost double the performance with better image quality than the 7800xt.

Worth it almost just for FSR4 imo, I disliked earlier FSR iterations enough to go Nvidia for DLSS rather than get a 7800XT.

If I was buying now a 9070XT would be a serious consideration.

You should try it RT on the RDNA 3 while not amazing you would be surprised how well it does in a lot of games even Cyberpunk you can run RT lighting ultra and reflections on @1440p with XESS quality and frame gen enabled in NC you will be 100-120fps most of the time some parts of DT though it can drop down in to the 80s then you start to notice the input lag a bit

Did this exact move from a 7800xt pulse to a 9070xt hellhound.

7800 was no slouch at all but the 9070xt has seriously impressed me in the pure horsepower that thing has over the 7800. I wasn't expecting loads but have seen BIG frame rate gains in nearly everything, more stability in average frames across the board at higher settings and RT performance his indeed a good leap forward.

Friend got a 5080 at the same time and where his benchmarks are a little higher, real world gaming there is not much in it.

It's a monster for the price point and defo more than a side grade from the 7800xt

Same here, the 9070XT is a monster but in ways I wish I had gone to the plain 9070. As it is I run the 9070XT at -30 power to reduce power usage from 310W to 210W with only a little loss is performance but less noise/heat as well (though have very quiet Sapphire Pulse card anyway). Also 9070XT is a massive upgrade for PCVR and FSR4 is great.
