Can anyone recommend a car tracker?

I'm not sure where to start with this, but looking to have some sort of car tracker device attached to the car, in case it goes missing etc.

I don't need any other security stuff to complicate life, like a ghost setup. Just something simple that tracks the car, where it's been, or is, I suppose how it's been driven also would be handy (or shocking).

Start here:

and read/watch some reviews.

I got a 3 year tracker nano subscription included when I bought the stang... think it runs out in March so around xmas time I'll start looking for a replacement and see if there's anything better/cheaper, but I can't say I've had any issues with it - barely even remember I have it tbh, I hid it in my car on day 1 and don't think I've even looked at it since. My App still tracks location so it's still working at least :D

"Goes missing" ?? So not necessarily stolen, just fallen behind the sofa...

I know when mine was stolen and ragged I didn't want it back and sold it soon after.

Gotta say, part of me thinks exactly the same, perhaps it's best not to get it tracked and recovered. If some little scrote has gone joy riding, I ain't gonna want it back! I've got gap insurance, so there's that..

But part of me hates the thought of them getting away with it. Although, can't say the police are in any state nowadays to do anything about it.

What physical security do you have? E.g. garage, wheel clamp, security cameras etc.

Got cameras, pointing straight at the car on the drive... But probably the best security I've got is the fact it's not push button start, and you need the key in the lock to start it, ya know old school :D :D

If you don't want the car stolen, then think about some additional physical security measures, as cameras aren't enough.

What's the car?

Its an SQ2 Black Edition, I've owned it a year. Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but its hilarious to drive when I want it to be (I've had it mapped to 400bhp) but it also drives really well for everyday stuff. And we don't need anything bigger.

We dont live in a bad area, whether that matters or not, and if I was wanting the car disabled, then the remap software has an immobiliser feature that can be enabled through the digital dash settings. So a thief would have to know its mapped and how to access the settings, which requires a set sequence to turn off the immobiliser.

When my dad's car was stolen back in the 80s and recovered by the police one of the officers actually rigged up the ignition, which was busted by the people who'd stolen it, so it could be started with a screwdriver so he could get it home. Didn't half get some ribbing from the other officers present.

Some scrotes from a football match who apparently missed the last bus or train home and nicked my dad's old Cortina to get themselves home nearly 200 miles away :(

You should watch the Mark McCann video of him tracking down a stolen car with a tracker in it.

Stood outside the garage saying "it's in here" and the police saying "we can't open that I'm afraid" and leaving.

I’ve used Trutrak for many years. The trackers are cheap in Amazon with a subscription on top. Seem to be a UK company too. I’ve contacted them a couple of times over the years and had a response within an hour.

Why not simply purchase a couple of smart things trackers like these?

You can get I Phone versions as well - there's no subscription fee and at the price and size they can easily be hidden in your car.

Not sure insurance (and probably the police - but we know how much effort they put in to stolen goods anyway.....) really cares about those kinda tags unfortunately. Plus, and correct me if I'm wrong as I've not used these, I believe they require other nearby devices to connect to in order to signal their location? The subscription car trackers are entirely standalone and will work virtually everywhere and are supported/encouraged by insurance companies.

No worries - you're quite correct that the above device does indeed require other nearby devices in order to signal their location. I thought they may have been of use as the OP asked for something simple (which these are) and they're cheap in relation to what they do. :)
