Platypus' Beginners Guide to Running

Sounds about the same success rate i had.

I try to avoid road running, but like the idea of Valencia but never realised how difficult that was to get in aswell!

Also can all come to me for coaching tips :p Met a mate last night who's been running, but he's always been someone who runs that bit too fast. I'm luring him into trails which he likes and was explaining it's better to set time goals vs distance goals. Last night he mentioned he's been focusing on that and enjoying running more and having less knee pain as he's not focusing on pace all the time.

Always a good rule to follow (obviously you do need some speed work, especially if you're setting pace goals for a race)

Post back in this thread been up and down time really running hard to deal with the now diagnosed Dystonia (previously mentioned in this thread) but I go out and run or try mostly turns into walking and running.

Hard to mentally deal with as I loved chasing times beating times so any chance of events have gone out the window now I could do them but just feel to slow to enjoy them.

Used to be 8 min miles now lucky to get into the 10's some days more 11 and 12 lately, I have been coming back from a hip injury though just trying to nurse it and take it slower helps with the walking I have to do.

Ive been out in the strong heat around midday quite a few times this week since back from my holiday and loving it, as someone who been running for 10 years I say stick some Ultrasun factor 50 on (sports version) and get out in the heat always good to get yourself used to strong heat running you never know when event comes what weather will be.

Glad to hear you’re still getting out. My mums recently been diagnosed with some heart disease which seems to be hereditary and I’ve been trying to get healthier as want to be able to run/bike as long as I can.

Just shows thing can strike anyone.

Did my first park run today and managed a 24m46 which I was happy with, given I was slowed massively at the start as I positioned myself towards the back of the start line.

Felt pretty comfortable all the way around and will be attempting a sub 24m next time.

I need to be better at timing. Woke up feeling dehydrated and tired from a weekend in the garden, so went for a run at lunchtime in full sun/heat. Now back at my desk dripping with sweat!

Still not maintaining consistent running without walking breaks, but think i'm getting to the point now where it's more mental than anything (not helped by the hills and heat).

Going to head out tomorrow with a pace alert on my watch and hold 6:30min/km to avoid the pace creeping up

Think this is something i need to do. Always trying to squeeze my 10kms in under 45 mins (though mostly due to time constraints) and the feel pretty burn out after as the trail i run really isn't as flat as i would like.
Not posted in here for ages but i managed my second half nearly 12 mins quicker than my first one at 1 hour 36 and also managed a 5k in under 20 mins which is something i've wanted to try and do so was happy with that!

Also got some new trainers to try out when i can. got a pair of puma velocity nitro 4 and a pair of deviate nitro 4

After my suspected torn ligament ~4w ago I ran 5k ~1w ago, and against yesterday. This week I beat my time last week by over 1 minute!
Still in the region of 45 mins for 5k but I am still proud of myself. I put my regular trainers on yesterday too not the running shoes!
I have my first ever park run on Sat next week.

Great effort. Torn ligament sounds nasty!

Well that's clearly because you're fast! If i could run 10km under 45 mins i'd be sprinting everywhere too :p

Sweet. Got out for a run and hit the 100km in July challenge on Strava. Didn't realise the date and so just snuck in on the last day! Looking at my Garmin and it's the first time i've hit that since ~October 2022 when i was probably around peak fitness and gone from 80 in May, 90 in June and now 100 in July despite increasing weather, and balancing a decent amount of cycling, but happy with general consistency.

Still need to put more focus on strength. Both ankles felt a bit weak back on the uneven trails today and need to work on them especially.
