Had a bit of time to process this, mostly feel a bit of anger and frustration that this didn't happen at the end of May when they had more time to plan properly but this is the Newcastle way.
It's been up and down since the Saudi takeover, in my opinion they were sold the club by Staveley (who incidentally, is trying to buy a stake n West Ham right now) likely on the basis they can be the next Man City. Whichever conspiracy theory you believe, it does seem apparent that several clubs in the league closed ranks on that to stop it from happening. Unlike Chelsea and City though, who continually stick two fingers up at the premier league and face little to no consequences, NUFC decided to abide by these rules (mostly) and after some lavish spending at the start have been chasing financial parity ever since. They have been forced, mostly by their own poor management and decision making, into some of the most foolish transfers in the history of the game. Not just the three duck eggs they bought for huge money this time last year but also the sale of the lad that's just gone to city for 120m for what was effectively 10 million quid.
I think there could well be some stability on the horizon. I've said it loads on here but NUFC fans need to come to terms with signing young players for a couple of decent years before seeing them go off to much bigger teams for big amounts. That is the only way to build the club and to take it to where we want it to be. Brighton on Tyne I have heard mentioned.
What they appear to be doing now should have happened years ago and unfortunately Howe is the one bearing the brunt of the good players being sold on the back of what was for him and his team more than a poor season.
We all questioned Howe last season, we all made jokes and predicted his 67th minute substitutions with almost deadly accuracy. Gone were the days when teams didn't want to play us. We had a physically relentless side that just didn't give visiting teams an inch. That all changed and he seemed incapable of adapting to it, left the team meekly surrendering leads on a record breaking number of occasions. I said it myself on here just a few days ago that I feared with the start we have we could well be sitting on nul points by the time the first international break rolls round and felt he'd be shown the door if that was the case. I am relieved that hasn't been allowed to play out because he has given us some amazing times as manager, his relegation saving in his first season almost if not more impressive than Tyneside's first trophy for 70 years.
The clubs income places them 8th in the table which is as good a metric as we have for measuring where teams should sit in the league. Howe consistently batted above that, until the rug was pulled from under him and then he didn't. How much of the players leaving is down to him? How much of the failure of the players coming in is down to him? We'll probably never know but what we do know is a trophy, a rescue mission of a season, some of the good results we got and the sheer manner of those, two champions league qualifications and giving the back to back winners of it a right pasting along the way puts what Howe did at the very top of Newcastle's managers post the invention of colour telly for me.
See ya Ed, hope it all goes well. 5 years is a canny stint when you look at current prem managers, not many last that long and leave with their heads held high. I have no doubt he'd be welcome back in the town anytime. Hope he gets the England job myself.

Not sure what to think really, I've been a big fan of Howe since the Bournemouth League 1 days and wanted him to get the England job ahead of Southgate and the Arsenal job but figured he needed a 'stepping stone' job. In theory, as much as the Geordie's probably don't want to hear it Newcastle could potentially have been viewed as a stepping-stone to either one of the most competitive clubs or international management. The issue really is if anything, his stock has probably diminished slightly of late.
Timing wise you'd imagine few teams are looking to appoint a new manager in August so probably he'll take a bit of a time out, he's extremely eloquent so would make a fantastic studio pundit (gave an absolute masterclass on MNF many years ago). It wouldn't surprise me if he took over Celtic from MON at the end the season.

It’s done and I expect he’s already at the summer camp to get our preseason back on track.
His pressing style will over lap with Howe’s style of play but he has shown he’s adoptable in his formations depending on the players available to him.
Howes backroom staff has been completely gutted and Matthias is bringing in his own staff.
