So it's a gimped programme with fewer events and no longer free to air. It can be watched on hbo max if you fork out 599p or get it bundled with sky/whatever. At least you don't need full TNT sports for it. Channel5 will be doing highlights each evening.

I'm in it for athletics, swimming and track cycling. The bowls started today but that is not my thing. :p

TNT had already provided better coverage of the olympics - terrestrial broadcasters don't have the streaming infrastructure or commentators (as netflix/amazon/utube wouldn't)
TNT coverage of tdf, or wrc, is majesterial too.
just seems like a vanity to keep the commonwealth games going , and would be interesting to see what the tax payer may have contributed on the recent expanded world football
(who paid for all the security ....)

Not watched any of it now it's not free to air.

What with the European Championships coming up I realise I really could care less about the CG nowadays. Just seems a bit antiquated.

Yeah, not something I'll be paying to watch.

Coverage is free in Australia. If you have a VPN download the channel 7 app, it's still crap though.
A girl from my old crossfit gym was competing in the 77kg weightlifting last night, she's worked incredibly hard to get there. Her improvement has been extraordinary. Failed her 3 snatch attempts, games over. Gutted for her.

Seems like every Australian citizen has won a medal these games so yeah, you/she must be gutted. :p

At least the track cycling has been a decent watch the last few days but the athletics last night was again awful. If you like coverage of track event winners doing laps of honour with flags draped around their necks instead of watching actual sport, then it's great. :/

I've not watched any of it. Not normally a big follower of it anyway but I think this year it has been particularly low-key what with a bunch of Brits withdrawing, scaled down event, lack of free coverage etc.

I don't know how it's funded but I wonder if it could be under genuine threat moving forwards. Advertising / sponsorship revenue will fall off a cliff if it hasn't already. You've got the Olympics, World Champs, then Euros (or equivalent). I reckon there will be some athletes in far-flung colonies for whom the cost equation becomes a genuine factor like can they even afford travel and accommodation for this sort of thing.

Yeah it's an odd one.

I guess in Empire days it was a thing, carried on afterwards but now the Commonwealth is an odd entity - it even has countries that joined that were never under British rule. Feels likes something that belongs in another time.

And England, Scotland Wales, NI against each other just does nothing for me on an athletics level. Even in other sports I never feel that enthused tbh.

If it had been free to air no doubt it would have been on in the background, no more than that.

Now the Europeans and Worlds are a different matter. Going to watch the World Championships years ago is still one of my favourite sporting events I've been to.

I flew out of Glasgow airport on Friday - saw at least some of the Aussie team in departures!

Along with the Guernsey team, which I wasn’t expecting…

I imagine the UK split generates some interest across the borders like Scots probably get well behind Scottish athletes competing against Englishmen in Glasgow, especially if they favour independence. Doesn't bother me much though it's not like I support an Englishman more than a British person. Chris Hoy got as many cheers from me when competing for Great Britain as Laura Trott/Kenny etc.

Same applies for other sports, take Euro 96 for example. I enjoyed beating Holland more than beating Scotland since it was a better performance and Holland were a much better team than Scotland back then, even if they played out a draw.

I didn't begrudge paying the £5.99 up front but I have buyers remorse now. The coverage is ******* awful. :p
that's on top of an hbo max subscription or standalone ?
for many years tnt had a tour de france, sub £10 offer I used to sign up to, but I didn't know even cheaper deals existed.
