GPU update went horribly wrong

Hi

My rig:
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z490 Gaming X
  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10700K
  • GPU: Gigabyte RTX 5060 Ti Gaming OC 8GB
  • RAM: 32GB DDR4
  • PSU: Corsair RM850 850W
I had a Nvidia 2060 super for years and my rig was solid as a rock. I wanted to upgrade so I’ve fitted a 5060ti. A clean install was performed using DDU.

FPS in games increased to 100 fps+ but then began to crash. With error Event ID 153. \device\video3 busreset TDR occurred and nvlddmkm errors. Definitely GPU related.

Temps were fine.

I read up about bios settings to change like: Above 4G Decoding and Resizable BAR, which I enabled. No fix.

I read that a BIOS update may help and that’s when things got worse. I flashed via USB to the latest F24a. Now the whole PC is unstable restarting itself even at windows. The BIOS settings obviously reset, so i checked and set XMP profile 1, and Dram voltage to 1.35v as per my RAM.

Still unstable. But worse - FPS has TANKED. Down to 50% of fps before I touched the BIOS.

Something about this BIoS update has messed everything up or I’ve missed some essential bios setting that I used to have, but can’t remember.

I’ve since tried flashing to another BIOS version F23, still same issues.

Any help would be appreciated. As I’ve went from a graphics crash to a crash + unstable system.

Use something like GPUz to check temps while it's under load. Run furmark to stress test it to see if it's temp related crashing

Have you tried much earlier drivers?

Are there errors in the event viewer?

Have you updated other drivers like chipset?

Has any monitoring or tuning software been turned off or reinstalled since you upgraded, like motherboard, afterburner (or other overlay)?

Have you set the PCI-E gen for the primary slot manually in the bios to 3.0?

I would disable REBAR, for the moment.

Disable XMP for now.

Stupid question, but you plugged the display cable into the graphics card and not the motherboard, right?

Are we also sure the PSU PCI-E cables are the correct ones, in the correct slots if it's a modular PSU? And that they're fully connected until the latch clicks home on the card?

If you have a fast external ssd or you're happy with dual booting, I would test a new windows install and see its stability and performance. You know for sure then if your original windows has crapped out.

Check out this YouTuber, his tutorials are very good. There are a lot of benefits to dual booting and putting windows on virtual disks.

I’ve tried every fix I can find. I’ve come to conclusion the card is faulty or it just not compatible.

I now have a new issue.

I had updated the BIOS and neglected to note the previous settings. Now my RAM won’t set to XMP 1, the system won’t boot to post.

I do recall the ram was not at stock speed before all this, but I can’t recall the specific settings.

Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (CMK32GX4M2D3

I’ve given up on the Gpu card and put the old one back in. System stable but at default RAM speed.

Any assistance appreciated.

When I upgraded a gpu years back, it highlighted a memory issue with my ram that never happened with the previous card.

Seeing as you also can't run xmp now - may be worth running memtest and checking your ram.

You might have a bad bios flash. Reset everything to default a reflash if out will let you. Did you update though the bios using a usb drive, or did you use a Windows app?

Did you try bios F24a with the old GPU?

"GIGABYTE strongly recommends all users update their system BIOS immediately to protect against potential security risks." This makes me think you need the update.

9060XT is the better choice with the 16GB VRAM.

Yes. Wouldn’t boot with XMP profile. I assume the F21 XMP profile settings are different to newer BIOS causing system instability.

Could be, but not run into this issue myself. I've not had a Gigabyte board in a lot of years though.

Do you not get the option for XMP profile 2?

Did you try manualy entering the settings for the RAM?

Also, i wonder if it needs a bit more voltage. Maybe 1.36 or 1.37.

No option for xmp 2

Tried manual entering yes.

Didn’t want to risk overclocking fhe voltage.

For now it’s stable on F21 with XMP enabled. I’m just going to have to try a different card and hope.

You should be safe going slightly overvoltage as long as you don't go to high, have done this myself @ 1.37 with no problems.

Have read some people go as high as 1.4 and 1.45 when overclocking past XMP/EXPO, but that's not for me.

This is for DDR4, i know next to nothing about DDR5.

Hope you have better luck with the new GPU.
