EV general discussion

Erm, why? Just why? I don't understand. Tesla had the opportunity to make a great roadster that would sell well. Instead they choose to make another one of Elon's fever-dreams.

Because it’s all about him and getting people talking about him - having his fingers in the stupidity pies of all the company endeavours (Twitter, Cybertruck, Solar City, anything to do with Mars are prime examples) leads to it being his own personal ego booster rather than a good use of RnD funds. He had a cult following and needs to do stuff like this to keep them interested.

On the flip side - the stunts (on the face of them and without looking into the details) are pretty cool.

Maybe he’s putting Grok into a black Trans-Am and looking for a cop who needs a new face…

I can see why they delayed the unveiling a couple of weeks ago due to bad weather.

I wouldn’t get too excited, they’ll make a few hundred of them and everyone else will move on with their life.

Edit: there is a standard road legal version with no thrusters.

I can't imagine they'll sell many, with the main feature of the car removed.. it's like advertising a V12 car and then saying you can buy a car with the V12 removed for a 2 stroke lawn mower engine. The nerfed version will literally be several times slower, we're talking a magnitude difference

You can’t buy the ‘flying’ version anyway, I think that is the point everyone seems to be missing. It’s vapour ware.

Have a look at the website, it’s ’invite only’. It will be like one of those Ferrari’s you can ‘buy’ but don’t actually own.

Tesla will control all of them and if you want to see it, Tesla will bring it to you, set it up, set up the ramp, provider a ‘driver’, do the tech demo, pack it all down and take it away at the end of the day.

They might park one in Jay Leno’s garage for the publicity but he isn’t ever ‘flying it’.

Even the ‘drag strip’ version is listed as ‘limited’. They’ll be so few of them made and it’s hardly worth occupying your mind on it.

I’m not sure what the duty cycle will be on those thrusters but they hose are not exactly going to be something you can get serviced at your local Telsa centre.

Was quite the spectacle. Will be interesting to see if they ever do those stunts with a person in the seat. Wonder if Musk would do it himself.

Watched this morning with the wife, as has already been said I cant see the flying version being let out of Tesla control anytime soon but what about the rocket boosted version for the insane acceleration? :)

Whatever happens we have no chance in the UK, we are not even allowed FSD/TAD :(

So what happened to the other Tesla Roadster that never was? Has that now evaporated for the jet pack Cybertruck / Temu Lamborghini love child to take its place as the next car Tesla won't ever actually release?

I mean, you can't say it's not cool. :D

Pretty smart marketing, using the SpaceX team to create something like this.

Obviously the flying element isn't going to be legal in public, but I can definitely see some variation of it being available (albeit in very limited numbers).

You can pre-order: https://www.tesla.com/en_gb/roadster

Great marketing, but getting insurance is guaranteed to stop these getting on the road

It will be a show car that gets a run out at those Americans shows with the big 4x4s

The one that was released, sold, and largely still in use today?
That one, or something else?
As far as I can see from a quick google, there were 2450 made, and around 2000 are still in use.
