EV general discussion

The new Polestar 4 SUV has peaked my interest, decent range and 2000kg towing capacity.

I've driven the Coupe and they are nice cars, well worth a look. There were various software issues early on, but hopefully they'll have been resolved by now. It may not matter but also keep in mind they are quite a wide car - more so than the X5 etc.

Tesla MY Dual Motor (2022)

3am airport pick up run last Monday morning - halfway there when I heard a bit of a clunk then suddenly "rear motor disabled - reduced power" -

Had very little time to react as I was on a dual carriageway doing 70mph - car immediate started to slow and only by pure luck I managed to just get it into a layby at the side of the road.

Tried a couple of two button resets, a few lock/wait re-enter car etc but car just flashed " Car shutting down" when I try to engage drive.

Had to leave car there overnight in layby ( get a £50 taxi home) and get wife's car to then head back up the road to pick up wife and daughter......

Obviously I'm out of the "basic warranty" as over 4 years old.

Got dropped off at car following morning by wife with the intention of getting it recovered either via Tesla or RAC cover via bank account cover......

Got in car......no errors/no issues showing. Decided to try and get it off the main dual carriageway as the next exit was 2/3rds of a mile - pulled out with wife's car behind - drove no issues.

Took back roads home, about 15 miles drive. No issues, no problems, no warnings showing.

Did read online that sometimes a power down/leaving it for a few hours sorts itself out.

However booked it in with Tesla Glasgow for following day for diagnostics - that was last Tuesday.. Drove it up to Glasgow (35 miles) with no issues.

Car has been with Tesla Glasgow since Tuesday last week.

They've had senior tech and chief tech crawl over the car including long test drives trying to replicate the error/problem I had - they can see on the logs the issue when it happened, but at the moment, they can't 100% rule out that it's just a "one off" - they are trying to see if the car will throw the same fault, that way they could say for sure what the issues are but at the moment the car has been fine.

They asked to keep the car for early part of this week to run tests / diagnostics and more test drives - I'm ok with that as I'm away for 3 days this week anyway.

Decent comms, good information and chat to keep me update. Also provided £70 Uber a day for me (however no Uber in my area!!) - will see what happens but I suspect, it appears to be maybe just a random once of incident......

Will update in due course.
Update on the above.....

Lots of back and forward with Tesla - they've been testing / retesting everything and got the car to "fault" again on Wednesday so clearly some issue.

After lots of backwards and forwards, in a positive manner I may add - Tesla have agreed to let me hire a car for now till they can get me in a loaner from them... This should be next Wednesday / Thursday...

Bad news - It's a motor/drive unit failure so needs replaced - All under warranty I may add.....

However..... initial date for parts/fix - 11th Jan 2027

Comms have been good, nothing I can do to hurry things along - so long as I'm mobile - it is what it is....

Any recommendations for a 12v battery compact jump pack. If anyone is going to sit and drain the 12v battery while waiting for my son at some sports event it's my wife.

I showed her how to switch to utility mode but I may as well have spoken in Chinese.

If she is in the car and it is ‘on’ the traction battery should top up the 12V automatically.

Has anyone got an ID-7 Estate? Thoughts?

I want to move away from my BMW 320i G20. I need more space in the rear seats for parents getting older (so no through tunnel, flat floor please), and dogs and girfriend. I need a big boot with decent range.

I considered a BMW I5 but it's too damn big for a lot of places that I visit.

Budget is 30-40k, I won't buy new so used 2 years old or so is fine. I'm quite picky on interiors.

Nothing Chinese.

Any other ideas?

I use a noco gb40 amazing bit of kit

And when I can't get to a plug I trickle charge my 12v using an ecoflow river 2 max :)

You say nothing Chinese but you can get a well specced Polestar 4 that’s 2 years old for £30k which will be a far nicer place to sit than any ID.7.

I had a hatch.

In 20 months it spent more than 250 in a garage.

It’s still there. Hasn’t been fixed. They can’t. I gave the keys back and stopped paying.

VW aren’t interested in any way. Last I was told, there are no qualified technicians to diagnose and work on complex EV issues in the UK.

All diagnostics are done online remotely with Germany.

Wouldn’t go near it. It’s the reason for my name :P
