Not sure if this is the right place on the forum to ask but can anyone reccomend any decent plays/musicals to see at the theatre?

The girlfriend loves shows with lots of dancing, and I would like to take her to a show next year as a little suprise treat. We saw Greece a few weeks back which she enjoyed but there wasnt much dancing! :p
 
I took my girlfriend to see Fame, jesus never again. Possibly the 2 most boring hours of my life, she loved it though. Ive swore never to go to another musical again. Sorry no real help, Fame did have a fair bit dancing though.
 
Is Greece the first thing she has seen? I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, as I'd expect Greece to have quite a lot of dancing compared to others I can think of.
My favourite ever is Les Miserables, however it is very much a love/hate one, I don't think I've ever met someone who had an opinion in the middle! It's really popular amongst all of the musicians I know (singers and orchestra-types).

Are you looking for Andrew Llody Webber style, or more mainstream like Mamma Mia? It will be easier to give suggestions based on that :).
 
Dancing... well I was dancing in the aisles when I saw Saturday Night Fever but am not sure its still on... :p

Billy Elliot is FANTASTIC! especially if it is Ballet Dancing she is into.

Otherwise it has to be Dirty Dancing... which is the next one I am deffo going to book once I get a chance.

Thanks for the suggestions. This isnt a dig at the theatre I went to but she likes the more technical dancing and the Greece we saw was not great on that front. Billy Elliot sounds like a good choice so I will have a look into that.

I have no idea about theatre myself so I am not really sure what kind of thing she is after without asking directly and I want this to be a nice suprise :p
 
There is theatre version of Dirty Dancing on west end atm, it is wildly popular among girls. Billy Elliot is hit and miss on musical side, though. Borderline boring

Musicals tend to be more about singing and silly dancing than anything more technical. I always pay more attention to the story than movement, so I honestly can't think of anything, other than perhaps Cats?

Avenue Q is a excellent comedy musical. Went to see it on a whim and loved it. Very very funny. Cross between Sesame Street and South Park. ;)

We will Rock You is my favourite musical though. Queen music and Ben Elton knob gags. ;)

Couldn't agree more, I have sat through a few musicals for the sake of various women and have hated everyone.

I've even sat through Grease twice :eek:

For the record I've seen

Grease
Fame
Starlight express
Crazy For You

Crazy For You was about the best as it has a bit of humour in it even though it's easily the least famous.

Starlight Express was the most dancey IMO

I am NEVER watching another one, no question
 
If it was still going then I would definately recommed Kiss me Kate.

Sadly - it shut down reasonably soon after opening. :(

Yet Cats and that other crap keeps on going. :(

Mamma Mia! - Went to see this at the Novello Theatre on Aldwych for the matinee performance on Thursday. A full house. A show full of emotions, great energy from the cast which you can feel and a highly enjoyable story driven by all the Abba songs you know. Such great fun, a smile during the show, after the show and now when ever I think about it. If you want to try a musical then start with this one. - 10/10

and to think I've only been to the theatre once (maybe twice) since 2006, that's to see Les Miserable last year.
I'm not sure if the Lion King was before or after We Will Rock You but I thought it was absolute garbage.

I'm not a musical fan:
West side story
Wicked I watched with the Mrs on broadway - she liked it, the movie too, but it left me cold.
....
Rocky Horror Picture Show - live is good (I don't mean a sing along).. just don't get too shocked by the audience!
Back in uni on a date, we watched a musical version of Shakespeare's The Tempest which was really good.

Dancey - probably not.

Have you tried taking her to the Ballet?

Just shows how many people here go. For many people the cost is prohibitive. Our two matinee tickets cost £226 and dinner afterwards pushed it towards £300. Well worth it for what we got but you have to be very selective with your choice. :)
