Hey all

Looking for a set of walkie talkies (2 or 4) to take snowboarding. Want the range to be as good as possible, as when in poor conditions / mountains in the way the range drops drastically

Also they have to be compatible with the Motorola 5522 / 5622.

Cheers dudes

We bought some Motorola ones this Xmas, around £25 as we bought them in the states. Dont remember the model as we dont have them

One thing I will say is make sure you get one with sub channels, as we were always getting some crazy Yanks on our main channel and had to switch to a sub channel.

They worked pretty well, although we didnt get the headset thing, that would have been useful going down the mountain.

Mostly the ex's sister and her Dad just used it for spamming the airwaves with stupid convos.

Deffo recommend walkie talkies for large groups, was always a pain before to organise lunches or meeting people.

I would imagine sat phones would give you much better range.

How expensive are those going to be though?

I would imagine as long as you get the same brand and use the same channel then most things are compatible.

Take note that they will probably be illegal to use without a license in the EU. The USA use FRS whereas the EU is PMR446.

Basically you need to find some PMR446 radios, 446mhz is license free in the EU. Range wise you're limited to 0.5w so don't expect miracles.

The Motorola XTN446 is one of the very best available but its pricey at around £150. The other Motorolas you mentioned will probably be quite good as well. Just stay clear of the cheapo no name stuff.

On checking around we had the Motorola Talkabout T5622 I think.

On looking at the UK prices I think Id rather risk getting US ones!

£70 here or $50(£25) over there....

Oh and binatone are a fairly cheap'n'cheerful brand (with maybe less of the cheerful).

If you want something thats going to last then buy a good brand, remember these things are going in freezing temps, and most likely going to get bashed around a bit.

When my nan was very ill, we got some walkie talkie watches. :p

Worked a treat, until she got so ill she couldn't push the button anymore. :(

Utilising my thread resurrection powers.. Kerpow!

Im looking at walkie talkies to go skiing with.. must be cheap.. how are cobra and binatone compared?

The Cobra MT series look ok.. MT200 - 800.. with obviously increasing ranges/channels etc.

The current motorola range seems to be.. limited..

Do not, I repeat do not buy cheapo ones. i.e. anythign from Millets or Blacks etc. Best to go to a supplier or use the net, Motorolla do very good, very reasonable priced ones and those I would recommend.

- Pea0n

Edit: at the end of the day you can buy cheap ones but i would guarantee you that if you actually needed them in an emergency etc. then they will not work...chances are the range, geography or weather would render them useless

Got a set of uniden 885s here and the range is superb - Easly reaches from mine to a mates over 2 miles away (built up area). Also they can take aaa batts if your stuck without a charger.

A good one but discontinued, Try the new ones XTNi and XTNiD. These are state of the art.

I believe its a competitor.. but the Binatone Latitude 650 Quad deal at £59.99 seems to good to be true for 4 talkies..

Should be easy to find if you want to see details.. but i cant find the Latitude 650 details..
