Hi

I have keratoconus in my right eye and have been considering getting RGP lenses.

I have been using soft contacts for a while bit I don't get the visual acuity that I would like. The lens in my right eye continually moves, impairing my vision.

I was just wondering if there where any people here that use RGP and how they get on with them. How long it took for you to get used to wearing the lenses.

I have heard that more care is needed when cleaning etc...any more info would be appreciated

This is not a medical thread and I am well aware of the rules regarding such.. I would just like to get some feedback from people who actually wear RGP lenses.

Regards

Scott

I've been wearing RGP's for over 20 years now.
Took about a week to get used to them, and now I forget I have them in.
Cleaning is easier than with soft lenses - just need to soak them overnight and rinse under the tap in the morning. From time time to time you need to de-proteinate them, which involves soaking overnight in a special solution.
If you do go for RGP make sure you get high DK lenses as they allow much more oxygen through and are a lot more comfortable.
One word of warning though - don't fall asleep in them. You'll feel like someone has poured sand in your eye when you wake up, though this soon goes.

I too have keratoconus. Been wearing RGP lenses for about 18 months now and really don't even notice them anymore and cleaning them daily takes less than 5 minutes

Well worth getting them if it will make you see clearer. I got mine on the NHS as well but obviously have to pay for replacements if I lose them.

Hi thanks for the replies guys, I was just wondering a couple of other things... how many hours can you wear your lenses for?, and how long can you go without wearing your lenses before you have to get your eyes used to using them again.

Thanks!!

I routinely wear my lenses for 16 hours a day, and have had them in for over 24 hours on numerous occasions, though my optician always frowns at me when I tell her that. I think they recommend 8-10 hours a day.
Never not worn them long enough to have to get used to them again.

I used to wear this type of lenses for about 10-15 years, to be honest with the expense and hassle of dealing with the solutions I don't both now and just wear glasses.

I used to wear mine for around 16hrs a day without issues but, as has been said above, don't go to sleep in them.

I found it took 3-5days to get used to them the first time and then if i had not worn them for some time (>week) then it would take 2-3days to get used to them again.

Vaguely remembering back, I think when you start wearing them you are only supposed to for short periods and then gradually ramp up the duration as you get used to them.

Btw, don't rinse them under the tap. I was always told not to do this by my optician and getting an infection or something in your eye is not good and not worth the risk.

tch tch rinse under tap .... very nasty habit. I am an optometrist and I am sure your optometrist has advised you against this. Basically very high risk of infections through water, so best avoided. try searching - acanthameoba infections.
