Since when has it been compulsory to fill in the electoral register form?

Got the usual one today except that it says that I could be fined for not providing the info: I go to the council web site and there it says ....

"If you do not respond to your form, we are now required by law to visit your property to get the information needed."

I've never know it to be compulsory before; big brother is here ..... ID card next, then compulsory location checks via 'phone etc.

Yeah i moved into a new home last week and i had to fill in the electoral roll form as part of the sign up process before i got the keys

As far as I'm aware you do not have to be on the electoral role, rather you do have to inform your local authority where you live and who else lives there for council tax reasons but can opt out of publishing this information on the roll itself.

electrol role, a tool so unwanted people such as double glazing firms can contact you easier....

why vote anyway - not as though one party is any better than another is it?

So tick the box that says "I do not want my information published". It isnt that hard...

hes right though , all the partys are as bad as each other its not like it matters who gets voted in

Why should your vote have anything to do with voting a particular party into power, use it as a protest against the current parliamentry status quo by voting for 'niche' candidates if you must, but make sure your vote gets counted. Help organisations pushing for a system of Proportional Representation (Then Polititians will have to work and all political philosophys are represented good and bad) so in the future your vote really will count for something, apathy will never bring about change. What ever you do, do not waste it, there are plenty of countries around the world where they do not have the option to vote.

1) As far as I can tell, you have to give the info to the registration officer and it is an offence to give false info.
2) The reg' officer has to compile two registers; one that you can opt out of and one that you can't.

The one that you can't opt out of is available to many agencies (mainly government) by request.

Still doing research but can't actually find the section of the "Representation of the People Act" that mentions compusory registration.

This thread was not posted to stimulate the "don't vote, they are all the same!" crap, it's here because it seems that you MUST register so that the government know how to find you.

This is true.

I would suggest making sure you on the role as credit agency's use this to verify your address when applying for credit.

Not voting - It's like complaining that you've got pains and not going to the doctors. Nothing will get done if you don't take the steps neccessary.

If you don't vote then you shouldn't be able to complain about "omg my taxes are too high, there are too many immigrants, police should have more power etc."

But no matter who is in power the situation won't change. The top 3 political parties are -identical- and even if one of them did want to change something, the civil service would block it at every step. The UK's essentially a one party state with the illusion of democracy, which is why I destroy my ballot rather than giving one of the scrotes the satisfaction of another vote.

theyve been sending me the form every few months for 3 years now, i keep throwing them in the bin, no fine as yet. Some guy came knocking at the door once, told him i couldnt care less about being on the register as noones worth voting for right now, still didnt fine me. Also mentioned they have all my info about who lives here on the council tax register anyway so just use that, ahh says he, our computers dont talk to each other. Go figure.

I guess i should register at some point as it affects any credit checks, but i havnt needed a loan or whatever for donkeys years now so i cant be arsed with it all.

I'm sure they care so, so much...
