Hi, is it normal for oil to steam after 30 mins drive, checked mine and the dip stick was steaming and steam was coming out of the oil fil up hole with the cap off, someone at work said it was normal just after turning the car off, but just checked my dads fiesta petrol and his doesnt do it

Sounds normal to me, cant remember if mine does it but surely the oil is a liquid many times hotter than the atmosphere and will thus.. steam?

I hope its normal as ive never seen it on a car before but this is my 1st turbo diesel and the oil goes black and thin on diesels.

Perfectly fine. Worth checking the level when it's cooled though. It's not steam per se but oil vapour and fumes :)

On average your oil temperature can be up to near the 100 degree celcius mark, from practical experience.

Thanks everyone

Just another quicky tho (cba making new thead)

My car has been re-mapped and as far as I know, more power = more heat, so would it be worth changing to a different grade of oil for better protection. Its running on Ford spec 5-30W now, Can anyone suggest anything better

The steam is water within the oil boiling off.

If it was the oil boiling off then your engine would soon run out of the stuff!

Condensation if it isn't driven much, or it thinks it is a Rover.

depends on its boiling point, innit

my oil gets to about 100deg after fast run - thought have never checked it when hot - i wouldnt be *too* worried about it steaming a little...

but then im sure oil is designed to go hotter than that - so shouldnt steam :/

Why, if it's in a sealed system surely it would just condense again.
