Apparently there are rumours through Miami and a few websites are carrying the story. According to sources Fidel Castro the leader of Cuba has had a setback in his recovery or is stone cold dead.

Does anyone see any good coming out of this or will it just be business as usual for Cuba and it's foreign relations

Casto's brother will likely be more welcoming western involvement and capitalism in the country.

I thought he'd been dead for a year or so :o

TBH havana was a den of gambling and vice until Castro came along and cleaned it up.

Most of the country's poverty has been due to US sanctions.

He was a major thorn in America's side back in the day, and despite numerous wacky CIA plots to kill him, they couldn't get him out of power. :p

Hope he lives a bit longer, at least long enough so that I can visit and see it before it becomes another american state...

Granted Cuba is a poor country, but it has a good health system compared to other countrys wth a similar GDP, and no one goes hungry. Downside is, there is no free enterprise, the government owns everything and pays a pitance to the workers. You will find lawyers working as bar staff in hotels as they get more money through tips.

When we were there both last year and this year, the people openly say they love Castro, until they are alone with you, then the truth comes out. One person was looking for a way out for her and her husband before Castro died as there is a good chance small factions around the country will try and take over equalling a bloodbath. Castro's broter Raul isn't as strong as Castro.

On the other hand, Castro had lots of "doubles" so he could have died six months ago and you wouldn't know :)

It's definitely one of those situations where it could seriously destable the country. If some of the more vocal anti-Castro groups fed by dissidents in the US feel they might have a chance if they make a grab for power it could get messy. It's going to depend on how much Raul will feel he can hold on to power. Expect to see reprisals taken against the large number of 'secret' police and informers prevalent throughhout Cuban society. I relly hope it stays peaceful and the US keeps it's nose out as the People are supurb and it's an amazing place to visit.

I Love the fact that he has Outlived the Yanky Presidents who tried to kill him :p
Rock on with your bad self Castro
