Jumpurs shiney toy syndrome is right imho. If its hardrive space your after I've seen them at auction for half the cost of the upgrade.
The only way I'd consider the upgrade price is if I was guarenteed one fo the new chipset and cooling. Other than that you will be sending it back soon anyway.
just set my elite up.
first off i left it at 720p and it didnt look good at all. if you looked closely at the screen there was a kind of # mesh just barely visible. i switched to 1080i and all is fine.
makes a little less noise than the premium, but minimal.

Anyone know a pretty surefire way to tell what dvd drive is in the console? I DO NOT want anything to do with the Tosh-Sam drives after the multiple consoles I went through that suffered from dirty disc errors with that drive. I can probably convince the mgr at the store I work at to let me open the box and remove the front faceplate if that would give me an idea? 
Anyone know the difference of what can be seen with the faceplate off with each of the Tosh-Sam, Hitachi, and BenQ drives. I have a Hitachi in my Premium and it's been faultless *touches wood!*

You will only get the new Hitachi or BenQ drive in your Elite and it's 50/50 as to which one you'll get. People on AVforums are reporting that this new Hitachi runs much quieter than the old one so it's a non issue.
There's also dashboard volume and it seems there are several fan you could get.
The quieter ones, the 'Nidec' fans seem to appear up to and including lot 0725 and the 0726 up are using slightly noisier DC Brushless (new version of the original Delta).

So the newer lots (0726 and up) use noisier fans than the old ones? Thats weird! Would have thought they'd have been trying to make the fans quieter to satisfy the whiners I really don't find my 360 fans to be loud, just the DVD drive when it spins up!

I really don't find my 360 fans to be loud, just the DVD drive when it spins up!I was flicking through an xbox magazine and they had done conparisons and they said it wasn't noticable any difference. A slightly different colour but it was down to personal choice which you preferred.
As I said, not worth £140 to find out.
Noise was an issue with the Sam/Tosh drives but more importantly they were the worst culprits for disc scratching and DRE's. The fact the newer Tosh drives are quieter is all well and good but if they are still chewing things then things are no better.

When my eventually dies or i when the falcons are out ill probably get an elite or a premium hdmi.

EDIT- Whats the PSU like, is it loud? Thats the loudest part of mine when im not in a game, its annoying laptop fan whine. Very annoying!

My 0728 is much much quieter than my original console.
