Tax fine

Hey all,

I bought my new car (2002 Focus) on the 3rd of August from a dealership, and it had no tax at the time of purchase. I knew I needed to get it sorted out ASAP, but a mix of postal striking, slow insurance companies and never having the right documents on me at any time (I thought the log book was the Service Log :p ), I didn't get around to taxing it right away!

Turns out a copper had clocked my car parked outside work on the 16th without tax and sorted me out with a nice £48 fine from there! I went down the Post Office 2 days later and got the car taxed, and got the fine from the DVLA through the post today. Is there anything I can do to contest the fine, or is it just a case of taking it on the chin? I'm not a tax dodger or anything like that and would have happily got it back-dated if need be (as it so happens, I don't need to) - just kinda gutted because £48's a big chunk!

Cheers fellas.

Is £48 a big chunk compared to what you paid for the car?
Take it on the chin and pay up.
I think the DVLA can fine upto £1000 and/or crush your car!

You should have got the dealership to tax it for you.

That was the original plan, but because the car had a previous owner, I needed to produce my Insurance Cover Note which hadn't been sent to me by my insurer at the time.

£48 isn't a big chunk compared to the price of the car, but it's a sizeable chunk of my monthly take-home - that'd be a fortnight's petrol!

Talk to the officer who issued it? Or one of his/her fellow officers?

I would, but I have no idea who it was, and it's already been passed to the DVLA :)

You don't need the log book to tax a car just the new owners slip. TBH you drove a car without a valid tax disc. You did no one forced you to just accept the fine, be grateful it wasn't more and move on.

Wouldn't you just love to be stopped by him: "Good morning sir, going a bit quickly aren't we, tis a rather quiet road, carry on."

The only time I've ever had a police officer say anything to me about driving was when one said 'bit quick that mate, please slow down in future!'

Interesting I've never negotiated that roundabout in an enthusiastic fashion since. Whereas a GATSO generated fine would just have seen me having a moan about cameras..

When I was 17 I drove too quickly a fair bit. Got caught @44 in a 30 by a local bobby in a bush with a handheld, said local booby knew my parents very well, oops. I spent a week under all speed limits, and now I've become a much more sensible driver, I still have a bit of fun, but generally, only when it's dry, quiet, and I'm the only one one the car.

I do agree, one warning is all a new male driver needs, except the complete morons that is.
