Best way to persuade parents to let me build PC

ouch... love to help but I find in general that the parental over-rule is mostly unbeatable. (unless you're a girl and can cry on cue, that beats parents everytime) - except of course to the truly relentless!

best approach is the non-stop barrage... yeh sure, it's a cliche but its how i got sky tv. and a new computer is actually useful to parents, unlike my sky tv which is mostly used to watch repeats of star trek.

show no mercy, be persistant to the point of zealotism. KNOW NO FEAR, no matter the grounding, no matter the washing up punishment. Parents are gentically programmed to obey their children (although parents would have you think otherwise)

Stay strong and defy them at every turn and you shall have your wish!
 
Ask for computer in morning > leave in bad mood > get into fight at school > blank parents > ask again 2 or 3 days later


rinse and repeat as necessary :)
 
If you really want to build your own, although there is no point with the rig you have at the moment.

Then my advice is put some effort into putting together a little presentation on exactly how you build a computer, everything from what hardware you buy, exactly how it all fits together, exactly how you get it up and running on the software side of things.

Then they might be more understanding, since most people who know nothing about computers instantly think of you soldering every single part together etc.

building your own pc is NO fun, its tedious, emotional and you end up cutting the CRAP out of your hands. Value for money is the only reason i build my own.

bleh last one i built, i had to take the whole of my old rig out of my case, build the new one, had a fault with the mobo, had to take the new one out, put the old one back in, wait for the replacement, take the old one out and put the new one back in again, and becuase it was the mobo i had to do it all from scratch each time. Got really stressful and i cut my hands to holly buggery
 
Aye it can be stressful.

Last time i was careless and used a cheap case.. well i have 2 very deep scars on my fingers. One cut through to an artery. That was me in hospital! needless to say when i got home i really could not be dealing with it :p left it for a few days
 
Buy the cheapest harware you can find second hand. Spend around a hundred quid on hardware & build that. Once up & running show your parents then go for the big build.
They are thinking Electricity & You = danger. There may be a good reason they think like this that you are not telling us.
If you have been a **** in the past building the cheapo system will go some way in rebuilding your rep.

Sounds like typical **** for brains parents, not exactly encouraging you to try, are they?

At the end of the day, if its your own money you are spending, have a go, when you plug it in, stand back, apart from plugging in the power supply and then touching raw circuit inside, I don't understand what it is that you can do wrong... apart from mismatching parts and it not working of course.
 
I built my first this year, aged 15 and all, although my parents trust me fully with anything electical so it wasn't really a problem.

Maybe they want you to work on your grammar before moving on to bigger and better things. :rolleyes:

But seriously, I have not read the 3 pages of replies... I don't see how they can stop you.
 
I put a PC together when I was 10, and since then I've built/re-built and overclocked about 30 computers.

If you bugger it up majorly then your very very VERY stupid. But as you can post in reasonably good english then its allllll goood and stuff what the parents think! :p

Thankfully my parents where never like this, built my own and my brothers editing PC without interruption.

I think the only the time they approached what the OP is experiencing was when they tried to convince me to get a Lappy from the purple shirts instead of the Apple store.
 
thanks guys, ive got a few options now, and thats :

1: Build PC from 2nd hand parts from MM/Ebay, for expierence and to show them i am capable.

2: Just go ahead and do it, say its a possible career for me, eventually just let me build it.

3: Dont even bother doing anything, which i dont really want to do because i want to do at least one of the above.
 
OK, I've had a think about it, if you ant to make yourself a PC there is no downside...

So, if this is your money you're spending, and you have it at your disposal just go ahead and do it.

If this is money that is in one of your parents accounts like birthday money, or a fund then you should be a little creative. There's nothing like outwitting your parents to show them you mean business and you're smarter than them lol;

Pff I did write a longish post on how to defraud your parents, but I thought it best not to corrupt your wee mind in the end. :)
 
Tom, don't bother wasting cash on building a test machine. I'm confident you can do it, just take your time and you've got my phone number if you need owt :)
