a new kind of terrorism

As I understand it the fires are set every year by local people in an attempt to burn the woodland, they think the government will let them build on it if there are no trees there.

But I could be wrong

thats true. but when you get so many fires in so little time , it makes you think thats well organized. Also the areas burned are of no value tbh.

Admittedly, looking at that map it seems a little suspicious that there are so many isolated incidents. Don't these things usually have a common source? Environmental conditions and a careless camper/smoker. There seems to be 8 or 9 individual sources there, although I am reasonably confident that almost every person in Greece smokes, at least in my experience.

That's terrible. Who'd want to set fire to such a beautiful country like that is beyond me.

It is clearly deliberate - several fires erupting of that scale at the same time is hardly coincidential, and even though Greece's conditions and environment is the same all over, it is still astronomically unlikely that such fires would start up all at the same time due to accidents or natural causes.

Just curious.

How many fire fighters does Greece have?

I know there is a lot of fire but its seems almost no where near under control?

Are the fire figher fighters not used to fighting forrest fires over there?

Also how have so many people been killed? Down here when people get killed buy a bush fire its normaly because they live in the hills with big trees all around them and there house on the edge of a national park or they live on a farm with a dry crop ready for harvest.
Does Greece have a lot of terrain like Australia and people like in the same type of areas??

Many European countries have sent jets and firefighters over to assist. Look at the picture of Greece taken from space, it's -that- bad. Horrific stuff. I would dare say it's just as bad as having a tactical nuclear strike inflicted, maybe worse.

the fire fighting corps are about 4000. 14 Canadair aircraft , 10 helicopters (russian made) super pumas , tank etc. around 200 vehicles. but guys you must witness a pine tree fire. it actually explodes!

What burns down here is Gum trees which contain Eucalyptus oil. It burns fast and really hot:(

20 or so years ago we had a fire front all the way across from the Adelaide in south Australia to right up close to around Melbournish in Victoria.

Then a few years later it happened again.

no its not gum , its olive tress (olive=fuel) and pine which contains resin where you can make candle light fuel too, retsina too. Resin is highly flammable.

to describe you how a pine tree burns , fire moves beneath it and suddenly cause of resin it lights up and burns instantly for 4-5 seconds. also these

are rocketed up to 100 meters , and they slowly burn for 5 minutes.

Ive seen pine cones burn, We had Pine trees next to my nannas old House :D

Shame they are doing so much damage though :(

Have there been any fire fighter casualtys? Or have they been lucky so far?
