Is 1080p essential on a 37" set?

I'm confused by all this - our TV will sit approx. 5-6ft in front of us. Do you think 1080p is essential for a 37" panel? Specifically the Samsung LE37M87BDX.

This months 'No.1 home entertainment magazine' reviews 1080p 32" sets? In one review (albeit a budget 1080i set), it suggests 1080p at 32" is not really required - though it makes a point of saying this is somewhat a debated issue.

Anyway - I've derailed my own thread, back to the 37"...

37" from 5-6ft away - 1080p essential or not?

From what I've been reading, 1080p is all but pointless on anything under 50" because it would be virtually unnoticably different unless you're less than 5' from the TV (which is daft!). Pioneer have apparently stated they're not even going to make a sub 50" plasma that supports 1080p.

I'll be interested to see how this thread goes though.

Depends entierly on what you use it for.

I'll say to you now, at 5-6ft any LCD, especially a 1080P one, will look awful with SD content. Of course, if you are gaming/using HD a lot then it will look great, and it would be worth getting 1080P.

It's all dependant on viewing distance. Think about PC monitors.

depends what you use it for
-A high spec. PC (1080p)
-Xbox 360 (720p)
-Ps3 (720p) Very few games on ps3 are 1080p
-SD content (720p)
-HD movies 1080p prob (I'm not sure on movies =/)

Your pretty much right, but add on there are also very few games for 360 available in 1080p, with more on the way.

Yeah next to none on the 360 and hopefully there won't be many to come :P
I pointed it out on the ps3 as many rep's seem to boast about 1080p on the ps3

I'm sitting 6 feet away from my 37" M87.

I'd suggest that if you're that close, then you're more likely to reap the benefits of the extra resolution. I have my PC hooked up to it, and playing my games at 1920x1080 just looks amazing.

To summarise, it's not essential, but it seems that you'd sit close enough to the screen to notice the extra resolution - so if you have the money I'd go for it.

Personally speaking, I'm glad that when I go for Bluray or HDDVD I'll be able to watch it in full resolution rather than having to settle for a downscaled 720p image. Considering you'll sit quite close to the screen, I'd suggest that you'd benefit from the 1080p panel too.

Hi davejm,
Please can you answer a couple of questions - just been checking out the Samsung site and the M87 looks pretty good however:

What is 'Super Clear'? The 40", 46" and 52" panels in the same range all have it. The 37" panel is the only one which doesn't. What is it and is its absence anything to be wary of?

Finally - what's the difference between the M86 and M87 range?

The 'Super Clear Panel' is a more reflective 'glossy' panel, which is supposed to give better black levels. The 37" version has a 'matte' panel, but it's horses for courses really and it suits me because it's totally non-reflective.

The M86 series is a Dixons/Currys exclusive range that is exactly the same as the M87 except it has a blue LED on the front of the TV. The specs are otherwise identical.

Hope this helps. :)
