What is lapping ?

finely sanding & polishing the heatspreader on a CPU to make it flatter, helps to provide better contact with a heatsink and therefore better cooling

Mine that i got photos of already

Left is stock, like when you buy it and have it delivered of these monkeys here!

Right is lapped. Starting with 400 grit and working ya way up, 600, 800 etc etc with the paper on some glass so the IHS is perfectly flat.

Reason behind it is.

1. make the IHS flatter as Intel had a bad thing of them being convex.

2. thinner to a silly degree which does lower temps

3. pure copper thermal interface as to a tinned/nickle surface

IT WILL VOILD YOUR WARRANTY SO DO IT AT YA OWN RISK

4. to look hard, build strength in fingers and arms be sad by waisting an hour doing it in front of the box

Did my Thermalright 120 today :)

Broke my Sata data slot putting the board back in (long story) just restoring my C drive as we speak, so I can't even see if it made my temps drop.....................lol I nearly smashed the whole thing up....thank god for my baby son's they made me smile and forget about it :)

May post results tomoz ;)

It may be a bit overkill using the finer grades.

A few mins with 240grit does the bulk of the lapping, then a few mins with 400grit to finish.

I think 400grit is a bit finer than how the IHS is at stock, looks that way to my eyes anyhow! :D

what

800 is all you need, need the 400, to get the platting off and the worst over layer of copper, then 600 to flatter and 800 to polish. Carther tested this out
