Can you drink from a fresh water stream?

On all the courses I have ever attended (including 3 Ray Mears courses) the advice was to never drink water without preparing it first. At the very least, you should use a fabric filter like a Millbank bag and then keep the water at a rolling boil for 5 minutes. You might get lucky once, you might get lucky a hundred times but there are some serious bugs found in water and it's not worth the risk.

For the record, I use one of http://www.raymears.com/shop_item_desc.cfm?id=87&itemType=Water&desc=Pre-Mac_MWP_Water_Purifier_Pump

Hi, are those Ray Mears courses good? Are the people friendly? I was thinking about doing the Ardeche course, but none of my friends want to join me so I would have to go by myself.

They are brilliant, can't recommend them highly enough, and all the instructors are really friendly. I've not done any of the expedition courses yet but I have spoken to people who have done the Ardeche trip and they say it is a great journey with some stunning views. I'm planning on doing the Arctic one next year if I can get a place.

Don't worry about going on your own. I've been flown solo each time; you will make friends easily enough while you are there.

Whats with all the sheep stories, do they like to go to streams to die or something? :p

Sheep often try and trek across streams unaware of the danger if you ever go walking up in the hills your sure to find at least one dead sheep in a stream. The water most likely fills there fur and drags them under either that or the current. Nasty :(

Yes mate, they are excellent courses and run very efficiently. They are however, not cheap and there are many other schools out there who run similar courses at lower prices. As far as I'm aware though, the Ardeche course is unique to Woodlore Ltd.

Slightly off topic. Is it ok to drink rain water?

I'd imagine it's a lot safer than stream water. As only the water molecules are evaporated from the sea it should be completley free of any contamination, biological or chemical, except for perhaps sulphur dioxide due to air pollution.

I figure if kids in Africa can get by on muddy cesspool water loaded with ebola and cholera alright, then a tasty English spring is just fine. I also swallowed lots of Newquay seawater, feel fine. :)

I realise that you you stuck a smiley on the end of that post, which suggests you might feel absolved of all blame. However, that is the biggest pile of crap I yet seen in this thread. "Kids in Africa get by on muddy cesspool water". You do realise that unclean water accounts for a dreadful percentage of deaths in lesser developed countries, don't you? Oh no, you put a smiley on it, that makes it ok. ****.

Ebola doesn't travel in seawater, and having had a raging dose of the Eartha's from Cornish water, I suggest you might want to not give advice in this matter.
