In what way is hiding them in a drop down menu which only reveals itself when you click on the posters name 'shouting PC specs from a mountain'?
It's more hidden than a signature.

Thining on it from a server perspective, it would be an extra query, something I presume OC have been attempting to minimize with the recent forum troubles
From my wonderfully distant A Level computing studies, it would more likely be just extra fields returned during an existing (yet modified) query. I'm not sure though, it would depend how it was implemented.

I guess it could well be implemented as an extended additional query, but it would still mean taking more info from the database at once, which would have at least a small degree of impact on load.
I wouldn't use it personally, but this place does harbour a good number of tech-heads so I'm sure it'll be of interest to those guys.
However, OcUK rarely implement changes. This recent update was the first one in how many years, and even this was just a minor vBulletin upgrade. I'm not saying the idea is crap, just that even the ideas that appear to be good never seem to be picked up on. All depends on how busy the admin team are I guess.

I guess you haven't noticed what happens when you click on someone's name in this here forum then. Adding an extra option there wouldn't cause any clutter (moderators already have several more options in that menu).
vBulletin does indeed offer the ability to add extra profile fields - and while it's been a while since I've delved into the depths of the software, I'm sure they get stored in the same table so it's a bit of extra disk space and RAM but not much else. Having said that, on a forum that is currently striving to reduce server load, it's a valid point.
As others have already correctly pointed out, you can use your signature and/or some webspace.

I would rather boast about my music gear than my PC so could I put that in there instead?
Depends what fields are set up or how it's done I guess. Although wouldn't you be better off going to a music related forum to show off your gear? As I'm guessing there won't be a huge amount of people on here with much clue as to what you're even showing off.
How is it boasting about what pc gear you have?
Its just logging what you have so people can see IF they choose to click on it.
Are there numerous musical instrument forums for which its prudent to know your music specs?
imo.. i say keep the forums as "clean" as possible i.e. how they are. theres no need for extra features like the "give rep" or "give gift" features that i see many boards use. from all the forums i use, this is the best, most clean and most respected one - even the sig limits make a big difference!

The geeks already put it in their sigs.
This is still essentially an internet hardware forum, so having PC specs available next to a user has relevance. Having your music gear, or your car engine, or the names of your goldfish isn't.

There's a bunch of forums where you're likely to want to list your specs if you're having a problem. And of course it's also a bit geeky.....but then this is a site dedicated to computer hardware and the tinkering thereof.It can be handy to have some details of your spec in a sig to use as something to reference when posting in the hardware forums (saves typing it all out). The one line allowance under the image seems enough to do that, imo.

Since I started caring more about cars than PC's I've often found it annoying to have to type out my system specs in every post I make asking for advice or suchlike
Yes they could, but signature size is limited. And how much of your system spec can you fit on one line (say they have an image in there aswell)?
I think its a good idea considering the forums and the traffic that goes through it asking for technical help, though I very much doubt it will happen.
Im surprised how many people actually think it would be used by people to increase their epenis. If it did happen youll easily spot them since theyll be still using their sigs to display their PC specs aswell
