Who/why buys physics cards?

The only hope for them is UT3 but even then the game will need to be able to handle the same physics effects in software otherwise you’re going to have multiplayer servers with users with physics and without, although it might be amusing seeing Pottsey alone on a server with nobody but bots to play with. ;)

Depends I may have one depending on how popular it is.. shame Physx won't drop the prices on these for 50 quid I'd still have one.

I have one and not afraid to admit it!! Had it since April 2006

Okay they arent really a must have but if Unreal torney 3 is anything to go by then theres a lot of humble pie to be eaten around here!!!

Every 2 weeks the same question comes up and its always the same answer, dont bother buying now if you want instant results, just be patient and wait till November :D

Why would we be the ones eating humble pie, considering we made the intelligent decision to actually wait until the card actually had worthwhile applications rather then being a prat and buying when it came out at an overpriced value and actually had less use out of it than the BIOS reset jumper :p...

If I end up buying one I doubt Id have missed much in the ~18 months since its been out...

And for your last sentence, ever thought of practising what you preach :p;)

ps3ud0

Well some of us like to be innovators and not just follow the herd when something good appears ;) :p

they kind of remind me of those pci cards that 'reduced lag' amazingly.

although thats harsh saying that, ive actually seen people with the ppu, where as these things...may as well be non existent :p

“they kind of remind me of those pci cards that 'reduced lag' amazingly.”
They where proven to work and speed up FPS. Its just it cost so much no one wanted one. Now if only they droped in price I would get one. But I dont play enough online games for it to be worthwhile.

What were/are they called? I fancy a google.

KillerNic is correct there was a 2nd version that was cheaper but dont recall the name. I seem to remember for WOW is made a large diffrance to FPS.

Just had a look, they're going for nearly two hundred quid.

For a NIC? Are they having a laugh or are they really THAT good?

I see physics being calculated completely on a GPU in the future. Will be really interested when Havok FX first starts being used. What games are there planned after UT3 that uses PhysX and the PPU?

Surely any justification for improved FPS would be that the card was taking whatever load there was away from the CPU? So presumably in that respect any pci networking solution would do the job? I'm not really keen on impriving pings, unless there's some ping-fps correlation I'm not seeing?

It’s more then that, it also replace’s the windows TCP/IP stack and handles it all onboard the card.
