Hey, well i have aol and the internet is very slow. I was considering switching to cable and i have some questions:

Is cable considerably faster then asdl and more reliable?

Can i get digital for the tv through the cable and only pay one lump sum. The reception in my area is bad for digital.

Who would you suggest i look at for cable and what sort of prices should i be looking at for a decent speed.

Thankyou :)

Q: Is cable considerably faster then asdl and more reliable?

A: Yes it's faster and is reliable, not had any problems connecting for months getting speeds of between 12-15mb.

Q: Can i get digital for the tv through the cable and only pay one lump sum. The reception in my area is bad for digital.

A: Virgin Media: you pay for a package, TV+Phone+BB but the bills are split into two bills for some reason. So you get one for your TV & phone and another for the BB but it's not a problem.

Q: Who would you suggest I look at for cable and what sort of prices should i be looking at for a decent speed.

A: Virgin Media, they offer 2, 4, and 10mb connections for a rather good price if you were to take out the TV and/or phone.

Thankyou :)

Your welcome :D

the 20mb is only in certain areas, i dont think they have upgraded everywhere yet, in which case it will be 10mb.

When i waas looking through virgin i chose which cable thing i wanted then in the packages it asked me to choose which broad band to add in and i already had a cost on the side so this confused me as if it was asking if i wanted to get asdl and cable :S

Furthure more i cant find anywhere where it says about ordering cable. It says choose broadband but it does not say if cable or not. Nor does it say about the cost of having a cable put into my house as we dont have one.

:EDIT: Also i can get like 24meg from Be for the same price as 4meg from virgin?

Plus with Be you'd need to pay at least £11 BT line rental on top - you wouldn't need to with cable, but it all depends whether you want/already have a phone line or not.

If youre not in a cable area then yourll have to use ADSL, if you are in a cable area then yourll get cable.

As far as im aware, they dont actully put cabeling into your house if you dont have cable, all they did when i got blueyonder was run some co-ax cable to the location where i wanted the modem, and to where i wanted the set top box.

So if you dont have cable already, then yourll have to use ADSL. Although ADSL may be cheaper, you wont get anywhere near the speeds advertised unless you live right next to the exchange, cable on the otherhand, i can reach my 4mb cap without problems.

If you get cable bear in mind that for most customers the network can't handle the load at the minute. They should not have upgraded people to 20MB some people get the full 20MB with over half not getting their full speeds. It was better when the whole of Virgin media customers got the full 10MB and no speed caps.

Although I am pretty sure they know there network can't handle the load and the UBR's are over subscribed so they should upgrade it if not I can not live with you tube taking 10 minutes to load and download going at 200Kbs. And very bad lag on online games.

I wouldn't say most but it's certainly a risk and something you won't know for sure until you're up and running with cable. Again ADSL presents its own risks and the potential for poor service is massive. Whichever way you go it's a postcode lottery really.

I like my cable connection. It's fast, reliable and is only £10 on offer until January 2008. It will then go up to £18 for the 'M' broadband package.

I've got rid of my BT line that had a poor 512 kbps d/l speed.

I use VOIP and a little box of tricks with SIPGATE for my telephone line.

It's just used for general browsing, so i can't comment on online gaming and downloading torrents etc, but I occaisionaly d/l Linux CD's and have no problem with the speed.

online gaming is fine here with my 20mb cable connection and downloading from newsgroups at 2.34mbs is very fast. a 800mb iso down in under 5mins :) .. its all dpendant on the ubr your connected to though and u can't request this. some are very oversubscribd and speeds are hit big time because of this. it all depends really on how many people in your area are connected to cable.

Thanks for all your replys. Now im not sure what to do.

If they put a cable in for free that does sound very good. But i see no 10mb option? only 2,4 and 20?

Where can i get 10 as the 20 is a bit to expensive for us at 37quid.

:EDIT: it also says up to 20mb but in its spec says 10mb download?

All people on virgin media 10mb are in the process of being upgraded to 20mb. If your in a 20mb area, you can get 20mb, if your in an area not upgraded yet, yourll only get 10mb.

Its the exact same package, same price, and eventully, all areas where cable is available will have 20mb instead of 10mb.

Currently there are no plans to upgrade the lower broadband packages.

Thanks. Well i beleive my area can have cable but i dont have a cable into my house so ill need that installed.

Someone menchened earlyer installation of a cable into your house is free? If so then this is great and ill almost certainly get 4mb cable internet from virgin as i currently pay that price for 1mb from aol (which is absoluttly **************************** ... just add in your own expletives).

I'm with virgin

It's worth knowing that the upload limits are low, eg 192kb/s for the 2Mb, 384kb/s for the 4mb.

Also they have a new usuage policy whereby if you use too much bandwith in core time they halve the speed of your connetion till the next day.

Caps are around 300Mb for 2m and 600Mb for 4m

Less than one episode of a tv show

If you reach the cap, then your limit not till the next day, but just a few hours.

Does watching a video but not downloading it count as a download? And also does playing online games count as downloading?

Downloading is where you download data from the internet. So anything that sends data over the internet to you, is counted towards your download cap.

So yes, watching online videos, and playing online games will involve downloading data, but the majority of games use very little. Videos on the other hand can reach the bandwidth limit quite fast, as they can often be large in size.
