New Corsa dilema

I have an R reg Rover 200 1.4 that does about 300 miles to a £35 tank and I do 120 miles per day. The car is getting a bit long in the tooth, can be unreliable at times and is developing a few squeeks.

I'd like something newer and more economical, ideally a Corsa D 1.3cdti sxi or design. I work for a GM partner so can get a new cdti sxi for £10,808 on 0% for 3 years. How much would a new Corsa depreciate if I added all these miles to it everyday? Should I run the old Rover into the ground?

Anything else I need to consider?

Thanks for the help :)

My workmate has just done something similar for his daughter.

If you have owned your Rover for 2 years (I think) and is MOTd and roadworthy, you can trade it into Vauxhall for £1000 (presuming your car is worth less) on this ecoflex initiative.
Try and play a few local dealers off each other, in the end he got the 1.3cdti club (I think) with quite a few options for £8.5k (9.5k without the ecoflex) which I don't think is that bad for a pretty decent brand new car with free insurance for the first year aswell.

If you are after a new car then it's a pretty decent option in my opinion, however if you're planning on spending 10k to save some money then it'll be a false economy.

there's got to be room to haggle in there and like spaz said trade in??

there's NO WAY i'd pay 11k for a Corsa!!

Deals like this work well if you're a middle aged woman who treats her car in the same regard as her washing machine and won't change it for 10 years if nothing goes wrong. That's £1000/year to own the car minus whatever it's worth at the end (£1000?).

However, if you're only going to keep it for a year or two, you're going to be stung heavily by the depreciation. Therefore you'll probably find that, for similar 'real' cost, you can have a better car (like a MINI) with lower depreciation on PCP.

God, dont buy a corsa if you're doing 120 miles a day in it. Its really not comfy except for short trips, even then, if you've got long legs, you get wedged into a silly position.

I drive one, hate it, dont buy one.....definately not for 11k!

I wouldn't go for a 330D but I definately wouldn't go for a 1.3 diesel corsa.

Why not go for something like a 2nd hand Fabia vRS with very few miles on it?

I'm sure you could probably get a deal like that with almost 0 interest.

You would be better off getting a bigger car - medium or family sized diesel car for long journey in comfort. Diesel car like Ford Focus/Mondeo or Skoda Octavia.

BMW 330D? Oh come on! :rolleyes: He's doing 120 miles a day and he's looking for economical car! :p

It does 40mpg + whats wrong with that?

Obliviously, you haven't taken in what OP has said in his first post.

38mpg actually and it will get AT LEAST 40mpg on a run, looking at a previous thread, the other factor is the car is getting old and tired, a 3 series will be miles better at going long distance and he won't have to fill up as much, so put the handbag down.

Thats roughly what OP is getting with his rover! 40MPG may be fine for you but not with 120 miles every day or £35 for less than 3 days!

Yeah of course, obviously I didn't :rolleyes:

40+ mpg, very comfortable care, easy to drive.

Or you could go in a rubbish little corsa, uncomfortable, noisy, not nearly as easy a drive, plus it may well be worth less than the 330 after X number of years.

Cheers for the responses. I really am looking for something cheap to run, cheap to insure and comes with a warranty. 0-60 times don't really bother me and a new corsa can't be any less comfortable than what I currently drive.

I would definately save money on petrol, but as someone else has stated would I just be spending money to lose even more with the depreciation on the car with all the miles that are added to it?

Remember I don't want a bank loan at 6%, I want 0% :)

Just a rough example, but say

You buy Corsa for £9500 @ 0%

You sell it in 3 years for £5500

Loss = £4000

You buy car X used for £9500

Sell it in the 3 years for £6500

Loss = £3000
Interest on loan = £300

Saving = £700

0% on a new car is pretty much never better than 6.2% on a used car, ime.

£950 in interest if £9,500 is taken out over 3 years at 6.5%
