Right I dont wanna be that guy...but

Sorry to bring up the Bluray/HDDVD but I wanted to have my say :)

If anyone can pay a studio $150,000,000 for 18months exclusive releases it's MS.

The theory I like the most about why they would do this is because they don't want either format to win, it was looking like HDDVD was on it's way out before this announcement, MS sees the future in DL content so by helping to prolong the war it's benifical to them as they now have longer to establish a DL service to rival both formats and keeps people on the fence.

There is talk of Warner now going HD DVD exclusive also and I just wonder if MS has had the chequebook out to make that happen if it does, it does kind of annoy me though which is strange as I don't mind exclusive games, but to buy out film studios to help out a format you don't even own just doesn't sit right with me.

at first i wondered what had i done in creating this thread but im very proud of the lack of flaming and i hope this discussion continues in a very professional OCuk manner :)

Im actually quite surprised that this has turned into *gasp* a proper discussion, maybe there is hope after all :)

Neither format may fail because its not as vital or significant as DVD was over vhs tapes.

Its purely a high end luxury thing and if they both play dvd ok then that may just be good enough as a common format.
In the long term I suppose one format will gain dominance but it might be 10 years

Agreed. i think there's a good chance that the HD formats will be more like laserdisc i.e. a niche format rather than taking over DVD. HMV charging £30 for blu-ray discs will only exacerbate this.

It really irks me though when people talk about blu-ray being 'forced' on PS3 owners. Blu-Ray is equally a games format as it is a film format. The limitations of DVD are already becoming apparent and that will only get worse. Imagine later PS2 fitting titles on a CD. I am confident that the PS3 will get better and better for the next 5 years, I seriously doubt we will go another 2 years without the 360 succesor being announced. And of course the 360 will be abandoned overnight like the original xbox when this happens.

We already see the 360's limitations with Blue Dragon, coming in on 3 disks. We all currently know the score, and only extreme fanboyism would argue otherwise, at the moment, the 360 is the daddy, but almost without exception, everyone acknowledges that the PS3 is a lovely machine. I was most surprised when i was polishing mine yesterday, a bit came loose and i thought "damn, i thought these were supposed to be well put together", only to reveal a slew of card reader inputs i never knew existed.

The 360 is like the dirty slapper who puts out every time, you know your guaranteed a great ride ever time to turn it on, the PS3 is like a barely legal 17 year old, it looks incredible, but its just not quite ready to go all the way yet, despite having had a few early decent fumblings.

It's definately dissapointing that the 360 is having to use 3 discs such as in Blue Dragon, Microsoft screwed up there and should have used HD-DVDs for their games.

That is the queer thing that when they relaunched with the PRemium and Pro consoles, surely instead of spending £150m bribing people to only produce HD-DVD, surely they would have been better spent actually giving people HD-DVD players in their 360's to buy the films.

I hope they relaunch the premium sometime with HD-DVD, it would be a must buy console if they could get it out at a reasonable price. I had the addon before, but its an exceptionally ugly looking piece of kit, moreso now if you have a premium in black, with a cream addon.

why is it dissappointing?, i have the game and i'm on the 3rd disc, in no way shape or form has it effected any gameplay or enjoyment of the game. You do not have to keep reinserting discs or anything as the whole world is on each disc, the only thing extra on each disc is the actual story and fmv sequences for that particular disc.

hahaha, I absolutely love it :D

lol, so can you point me in the direction where it states in writing that a "next -gen" console shouldn't have multiple discs, because i cannot find it anywhere

I think it was Sony that said "Next-gen doesn't start until we say so".

A lot of people must believe this.

my problem with his comment, is he devised an opinon in 5 minutes of having it plugged in. Which for me says he hasnt played very many games, Nor has he watched a bluray movie, Nor has he browsed PSN. Sounds a bit silly giving an opinon of that type when not actually trying the console.

5 minutes was enough.

So you're basically saying that with the 360 you have to pay for it, it's over very quickly and afterwards you need to visit the clinic (RRD clinic :p)

But with the PS3 you need to take your time as it's a new experience which you know will reward you in the end :D

Maybe not so much with Blue Dragon, but in a year or two with games like GTA theres either going to have to be multiple discs where you have to switch disc when you enter each island or its going to have to take a graphical hit compared to the PS3 to fit it on to one DVD.

Its supposed to be a next gen console.
Well it came out in 2005 which is a while back now, also nothing is really next-gen about the 360/PS3, great they can support higher resolutions, that's about it.

All they are is more beefed up Xbox/PS2s that run in higher resolutions.
