I used to have this program when they gave it away for free briefly - and I loved it to bits. Are there any free alternatives out there? I particularly liked winrar's ability to add itself to a context menu.

Ok lads just installed it, it seems very nice. I do miss Winrar's ability to integrate itself on my context menu's though..
Open 7-Zip's exe. Then Tools>Options>Plugins>Options>Check "Integrate 7-Zip into shell context menu".

Cascaded box means its a mini-menu off the main context menu. I have mine off, I like a sleek single lined menu here.

I started using 7-zip (beta) last week, done a few tests and it definitely seems to be a better compressor than Winrar (10%+ smaller), although it is slower as well. Not too much of an issue on modern CPUs though.

I think that depends on the file format (.7z or .zip) and compression level. I think its perhaps just a little bit slower but tbh I haven't use WinRar in ages.

Was a long time user of winrar but recently went to 7Zip when I found out it had an x64 release and was supposedly multicore aware. And I really like it.
