OK, so a while ago, my laptop had a fit and basically windows stopped doing anything, programs getting stuck, ctrl-alt-del didn't even work, it was having none of it so i turned the power off. I turn it back on, but now it won't boot up at all, just sits at the bios screen doing nothing, F2 into the BIOS and it locked up, F12 for boot menu would result in immediate reboot. Anyway I figured it might be toast, but tried taking the cmos battery out to reset it. To my surprise, it would now boot up fine, however I have just noticed the clock was wrong, and upon opening up the full clock, saw the seconds were speeding up and slowing down all on their own accord, from super slow to super fast. I have never seen anything like this before, is this my motherboard finished or could it be the result of a dead cmos battery?
Thanks :)

Recent windows update has included a timezone auto setting feature update thingy. Have you got auto update on ? Could that have messed it up. If not it's the Battery.

I applied the windows update today on both my pc's, the other one is plodding along fine though. I will try to find another battery for it tomorrow, looks like a specialist kind of battery, what local stores sell these kind (obviously not ocuk competitors ;))?

Thanks :)

I applied the update today, my clock is ticking funny too, it pauses every 5 seconds, but it's keeping good time.

XP has been doing that since the beginning of time :p

Any battery of the same specs will work-it doesn't have to be a computer battery :)

well thats interesting, I had a look at the clock on my other pc and that one is also ticking strangely so maybe it is to do with the patch after all and I just set it wrong to start with. Will still get a new battery mind following what happened before.

Do you mean the clock speed of your cpu or the windows clock at the bottem part of the screen??

Ive heard about the windows clock speeding up and slowing down before due to update issues.
