Idea for a new forum implimention

I've only ever been to this general discussion page. A friend directed me here and I was impressed by the range of topics. Many things I read here take my thinking off on a tangent and for an hour or more I'm lost in something new .... I find that relaxing.

I hope nothing changes.

What I mean is that there are probably a similar number of regulars but the regulars in here post more per head as it were, as a lot of those hardware threads will be new signups who have signed up to fix something then not stuck about...
Well you don't know whether they've stuck about or not - the point is if the GD posters post more often per head, that means the hardware forums have more posters.
And a lot of the people who are here MAINLY for the hardware forums ALSO pop into GD quite often (like me for instance), which swells the size of the lifestyle forums. At a glance I would guess that only a small proportion of people are here ONLY for the lifestyle forums and never venture into the hardware sections.

But yeah I agree, if it would slow down the forums then I wouldn't want a "spec" section in the profile. If I'm posting to ask for help it's only polite I list my spec in detail either in my post itself or in my sig, rather than forcing people who want to reply to help me to click on my username and click on something in the drop-down menu to be redirected to my profile page to see my rig...

Surely the PC information could easily be added to a persons profile and displayed under the "View Public Profile" option.

a lot of people on here already have their specs in their sigs. It would be good if it was in a drop down list but not really something that'd make a huge difference, the main thing about the site is the posts and the members which is my reason for being here.

I just had that same thought.

Please excuse my abruptness last night, I'd had a few pints while watching the Mighty Status Quo at Trentham Gardens.

How comes this has turned into more of an arguement?

Ive been trying to pick out the points in this thread. This is what i see:

1) Having it on a drop downlist where you cant achualy see it unless you want to serposidly allows you to increase your E-Penis

--All i see it does is free up your signatures and allows you to say my my spec is under my name instead of type it.

I also quite like seeing what others have as it intrests me.

2) People in GD think its to geeky??? Its geeky to be able to display your pc spec in a hardware forum?

Strangely enough this idea was not aimed souly at the GD part of the forum.

3) Some say its achualy not to difficult to add in on V bulleton and wouldn't stress the server out.

4) Some think it should just be added into your profile. But be honest, how many of you look at peoples profiles?

A drop down is a little ugly though isn't it - wouldn't those neat blue popup menus you get clicking on someones name be better?

Maybe another button to open up a similar menu with your spec in it.

It might be an extra query, might such a tiny easy one it's insignificant - better 20 <5ms queries than 1 2 second one :)

Not saying it'll happen - I don't decide feature hacks - but it's certainly possible and not too difficult.

Just some food for thought.....

You could implement it with hyperlinks to the corrosponding items on OcUK, so people can click it and then it takes you to the item so you can purchase it.

That way you increase sales and people can find prices and info on the products inside the persons machine.

You could also make it a "visible option" in the user CP ? That way the "nay sayers" can just turn it off to speed things up if they really think that it will affect performance.

Also, maybe a field entry to add your 3Dmark score or benchmark score so that other users can see the spec and what kind of performance you can get out of it, however this could mean that you need to state drivers and build versions etc...

I don't really know much about coding etc... so just speculating!

Ho hum :)

Now that is a bloody good idea.
One of the main problems of buying new parts is 'Does that work OK with that?' and seeing the parts in peoples 'drop downs' will confirm this.
The hyperlinking to the shop can only have advantages.
I'm coming round now to the OP's thinking.

I like to think that I have good ideas !

Compatability is one of the issues that a lot of people post about, it would certainly reduce threads posted on revisited subjects

That is a good idea (Booner! and Tried&Tested) - also, I've suggested before about a better way of linking to products in the shop, given the long handed way of doing a print screen to recommend a rig to someone - how about a button in the shop to make a forums-usable piece of html, with links to all the products, and pictures as well?

Example

here is your spec ->

Item Pic ---- Item Desc --- Item Cost
"
"
Totals =
for the win

I want a cut in all profits made from this idea (10% will do) ;):)

Sounds like some good feedback though :P The idea of adding links to ocuk shop in it sounds good. Although some people may buy things which arnt in the shop but you do stock most things and i gues they just wouldn't have a link.

Glad someone from ocuk saw this :)

*coughs loudly and points to orginal posters name* ... ooo thats me :P

ahem, 3.33% each if you don't mind ;)

Would be pretty good if in general hardware when someone did you a spec, you could either (a) click on that system spec and it would populate your basket or (b) click on each individual item to add to the basket (particularly useful in forums other than general hardware).
