Thinking of buying a Wii (recommendations?)

As title, with my 360 off being pieced back together by Microsoft I'm getting a bit bored. Though I'm tempted to just grab a cheap Core to tide me over for when I leave for Uni again 360-less, it seems like a bit of a waste of money really. Was also tempted by the Ps3 (never thought I'd say that!) but it's just too expensive for me right now.
Me and my housemates have been thinking about getting a Wii for ourselves for sometime, so this seems like a better option (and I have the possility of pinching some cash back off them for it as well, bonus!). Only annoyance is that I wont be able to plug it into my monitor as I do with the 360, but as it'll be a house thing that isnt really an issue.

Annnnnyway, my question boils down to: What would be a good couple of games to grab with it? At the mo I'm thinking Resi 4 and Zelda, as I'm a massive fan of both the series. Any other similar alternatives, or random recommendations?
Also, what online features does the Wii actually offer? Searching about only yeilded fairly vague answers. Finally, what extras should I be looking at (save to obvious necessity for additional controllers)?

Thanks in advance.

I you are a massive fan of both series you will not be disappointed with Zedla TP or Resident evil 4, also if you are going to be playing it with friends Mario striker might be a good choice.

Another vote for Mario Strikers Charged Football - its great fun with 2 or 4 players. I'm sure you wont be disappointed, and I picked it up for £29.99, which is pretty good value. Probably get it for less if you search around. The Wii Sports game is also great multi player value.

Keep in mind that both Zelda and RE4 are GC titles with Wii controls bolted on. Both work great and are superb games, but be prepared for them to look last gen. Wii Sports still gets more play time than anything else at my house - a few drunk friends/family and Wii Bowling/Tennis is awesome - and Wii Play is well worth getting with an extra Wiimote as it only costs a fiver extra.

Keep some cash aside for Galaxies and Corruption :)

get the wii, but be prepared to not use it for long periods of time as there just isn't any games out for it and the upcoming ones seem to be delayed after delayer.

mario party is great, though a disappointment as it could have so much more fun to it. Anyone else find the mini games after each round very mini? as in lik can last 10 seconds, sometimes less?

other then party and sports i can't really recommend any others as they have all been a right bore for me at least, like play them once with people, then never again.

the wii is good now, and im so sure it will only get so much better once the real titles start coming out like super smash bros, its just its taking a while for it to happen.

The next 5 months are looking very good for the Wii so i think Zelda and re4 will do you untill the next lot of games are out

Theres lots of co-op games coming out for the 360 as well as competative split screen ones so will be good for uni and with your flatmates. My 360 with halo, fifa etc got more use than the wii.

Would you not rather do halo 3 co-op with your flatmate than play him at, what, wii bowling?

The amount of times I have heard 'wii is not a fad' then people saying they just dont use them anymore is ridiculious. Also, as with the ps3 why wait for good games when the 360 has them now. Very few gamers would choose a wii over a 360, its a decision you would regret, but wouldnt be too hard to sell I guess, theres plenty of women out there like my sister who would be tempted.

The vocal minority I think you'll find. In my circle of friends there's about 10 who regularly play on the Wii. Big bowling sessions, doubles tournaments. These games get boring on your own or if you only ever play with one other person, but get a bunch together and they're ridiculously fun.

I suspect some people are disappointed because the Wii works best at the moment as a social/party console. It's awesome to turn on once or twice a fortnight when a group of friends come round, but not something to play everyday on your own. While there are some decent single player games - i've enjoyed RE4, Zelda, Mercury Meltdown and Eledees - the Wii really shines in a group and appeals to everybody. Without a doubt the most riotous and plain fun gaming sessions i've had have involved the Wii and people who wouldn't consider touching another console - this includes a host of girls and my girlfriends mum, who was so taken she got a Wii for her 54th birthday! (which, once the bottles of wine had been drunk and the wiimotes came out, had me crying with laughter).

Metroid Prime and Mario Galaxies are out soon and Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart will both be playable online. The Wii can only get better as a traditional console while remaining the king of party gaming.

All we need now is online Wii Bowling with the option to form teams, make your own shirts, customise balls, and enter/create leagues. That would be utterly awesome :)

I was round a friends last night and his wife has one and me and mate had bash must say was a laugh for while but not for long mm but now reading about single player games > zelda e.t.c im more interested.

Are these consoles reliable so if i was going to get one second hand could there be a problem ?

sorry to jump in thread with a question.

cheers jay.

Yes the Wii is a reliable console

What's this got to do with the actual question asked in the thread?

If the question was, "Should I buy a Wii or a 360?" then, fair enough, mention the co-op and competitive split screen games that are due out for the 360. But that wasn't the question. It was, "What Wii games should I get?".

He said that himself and his housemates were thinking about a wii, I was simply commenting on how the 360 has lots of multiplayer games coming so he doesnt need to buy a wii for that.

Its nice to see that your reply really helped his desicion though...

they need to make more online games.

online bowling
online golf
online boxing
online tennis

i know some of these might already be in the pipeline but you can't have people round all the time, sometimes you have to play by yourself - which is where online wins.

Get:

Zelda
Resi 4
Paper Mario
Metroid Prime 3
Marble madness/Kororinpa
Trauma Centre

When released get:

Mario Galaxy
Smash Bros Brawl
Mario Kart

The Wii already has far more great games than the PS3 and some amazing games out soon.

My wii gets used far more than my 360.
