Bioshock Autopatcher breaks the game.

As I have said several times above, if you clicked "ignore" it isnt screwed, you have to go into AVG Control Centre and DISABLE Resident Shield and then the game will boot fine.

Close AVG is not good enough, you HAVE TO disable resident shield!

EDIT: As Loadsa says above too ^

i clicked ignore as i've said and it still did it.

Yeah it does, it did me too, i clicked ignore al times and it still screws it, if you have AVG theres nothing you can do to stop that. but clicking ignore doesn't remove ya bioshock.exe, it just prevents it from being used cos even though you said ignore avg sees it as a threat and protects ya pc from booting it.

To get around this you deactivate resident shield and voila, the game will boot fine! give it a whirl!

Does this affect users who bought it on Steam.
As I have AVG and not a sausage.
Game plays fine.
In fact just installed latest avg update 30 seconds ago.
And everything still ok.
Just scanned the bioshock.exe, right clicked it, selected scan with avg....no virus found.
What's going on ?

AVG is to blame here - the other day AVG said some RAR'd Exes I created contained viruses which they didn't...

Glad I decided to try NOD32 on the same day I got Bioshock :p

Hmm has it been fixed now? I updated my AVG, activated resident shield and bioshock boots fine, and I can go in the bioshock folder without any warning? Must have fixed it?

One good point from this is that so far Bioshock is the first uncrackable game!
That might be the case (I don't know) but it also hurts a lot of people that bought the game and the people waiting for a pirated version will not go out and buy the game anyway so it doesn't give Take2 any more revenue so it is wasted time and effort that only hurts them.

not true, its easy to crack. i payed some company around £27 to crack the activation and it now works. ¬_¬

:p

seriously though, people talk such crap. " look how much stuff you have to do, i just want to put the dvd in, install, remove dvd and play".

well thats exactly how bioshock works, unless you purposely uninstall and reinstall several times till you can't install again, because there is a little problem with the install slots not being released as they should. but before the game was released the intent was 2 concurrent installs ANYWHERE, and if you uninstall one slot is released. i can't name a single situation where you need it installed more than that unless you're wanting to install it on mates computers for more than 1 person to be playing.

as said, so far the "overly aggressive" drm protection seems to have worked very well. even delaying a cracked version by a week will increase number of people buying the game legally, if it takes 4 months, most people, especially as basically everyone thinks its great, will simply buy it.

the 8 people on the net who are complaining because they purposely tried to break it, still won't buy it. but those guys wear tin foil hats too, so join that group if you really want to.

AVG has for a long time been giving false positives, for games, and other random stuff. it has repeatedly missed stuff other av apps can find. its basically entirely useless IMHO.

for my own computer(i always get roped into checking other peoples comps with virus issues and stuff) i've not had a virus i think, since the massively rampant "your computer will reboot in 30 seconds" XP exploiting thing a couple years ago. not had much before that either. yet i don't run anti virus stuff, i have something installed and disabled, that i'll run a scan with every few weeks but thats it. somehow staying off dodgey pron sites, not getting torrents or using kazaa and i never have issues :o

think you'll find a LOT of people wanted to play the game and WILL go and get it if they can't find a crack after a day/week. for a different game maybe it wouldn't be the same, but this is a game we've been waiting for, has been hyped a little but for the first time in a Long time has actually lived up to it. 10/10, 9/10 might be its worst mark. you think people who love games will simply just say meh to it and leave it alone, no , they'll go out and buy it.

as i said, i haven't seen anyone with a REAL issue with the game and installing it.

online activation takes no time at all. the only issue was servers going down which IMHO isn't at all surprising considering being massively overwhelmed. ok not perfect, but delayed a small percentage of people by 4-5 hours or so. for 99.9% of users they simply download or install from dvd, and 10 seconds later its all working fine. avg is now screwing people, but thats as bad as it is.

I have seen reports of people not being able to activate their legitimate copy of the game, now false positives from AVG, I can imagine if you are unlucky and get all that you would be quite annoyed.

Also, don't you have to keep the DVD in the drive with this game?

Anyway, I'll stop now, I haven't got the game so have no experience.

Yes, you need the dvd in the drive for the game to work. I agree with what you've said in your previous post that it really only affects people who pay for the game, which is pretty ridiculous.

It would seem AVG have fixed the problem, as I can now play again with the resident shield turned on. At least it seemed to get fixed quickly :)

I don't care lol.. I just know its getting a lot of attention for the fact.

Anyways its a great game.. well worth the £24 I paid for it.. even if there is no Multiplayer included.

Just need a new system to play it properly....

lol, the only way avg works is by telling you that everything is a virus, it has to be right sometimes doesn't it?? right??

This is one of the reasons i pay for nod32

I'm the same, AVG causes no end of problems... it's a waste of space... as the saying goes, you get what you pay for!

crappy securom for you, installs all sorts of rubbish that sits hiding in your processes watching what your doing etc. Not suprising AVG sees it as a virus.

Apparenlty using "Process Explorer" - free download from microsoft technet you can see what its actually doing and what threads/files it has open. Scary stuff
